Eavesdropping? Nice! I haven't heard that one mentioned before. :D
The first time I played through T2 I loved Eavesdropping because I got to finally see who the Mechanists were. It had a great mood, with the look of the interior accompanied by the guitar riff sounds, your first exposure to the combat bots walking around, the small downstairs workshop, and the contrast with the graveyard and catacombs. I liked how you could tell it was a re-purposed Hammerite building. It fit the theme of the game by showing you the old elements of the Hammers juxtaposed with the Mechanists. Going into the catacombs was like going back in time to TDP.
Overall, it's a great church/temple mission.

Those Hammers and Mechanists like to live dangerously. The live in places where Haunts also live with only a locked door or a lift ride between them.
I remember playing Eavesdropping, blackjacking a mechanist then taking him down into the crypt and leaving him just off the patrol route of a Haunt.
Years ago I played TMA before TDP, so I didn't recognize the haunts' chain noises. Went down there, saw it its back turn towards me and tried to blackjack it, as I thought it was just some lonesome Hammerite like the one in the harbor. (I was something like 15-years old and very stupid.) Jesus, when the haunt turned its face and started laughing... I ran up the stairs, gasped some breath, and got shocked again when the haunt smashed Garrett with his hammer. Had to hit Esc and quit the game before dying and leave the game for the rest of the day.

Thief: The Dark Project... plus Song of the Caverns.
Same, there's nothing quite like listening to the Horn of Quintus the first time. Gold becomes excluded because I really started to dislike Thieves' Guild as it is way too large and even confusing.

Horn of Quintus is in Down in the Bonehoard. Song of the Caverns is the opera house level.

Year after year I am more and more convinced that I am the only person in the world who likes Thieves' Guild. :weird:

I don't know how many people who were playing Thief in the early days still prefer Thief 2 but I'm one of them. I fell in love with Thief when it came out, playing and replaying the demo to death until I had enough money to get the game. It is obviously a much more important and iconic game than its sequel, laying the foundations of the series, bringing amazing levels and defining moments in gaming (The Bonehoard, Assassins, The Haunted Cathedral, The Lost City, The Maw...) Thief Gold went under my radar for a long time even long after Thief 2, because I wasn't really aware of it -- It didn't come out in France and I wasn't registered at TTLG, only reading it for technical assistance as well as lurking CommChat -- but I loved it too. IMO, it didn't dilute the experience too much and I even enjoyed the Thieves' Guild very much, a level with an intricate and interesting layout only hindered by the rather unhelpful maps.
Still, when The Metal Age came out I immediately knew it would be my favorite. I loved the more detailed environments: because of that, they felt more lived-in and real than in the first game. At no point in the original game did I really feel: "this building I'm going through has people living inside". I also loved the stronger technological aesthetic. More importantly, I've always been a sucker for artistic experiences of things that were 'past their golden age'. It's not easy putting the feeling into words, but in Thief 2 the setting has changed and there's this looming impression that things will never go back to what they were before. Declining hammerites, pagans without a leader, this isn't the age of the war between the Builder and the Trickster anymore and, while it's sad, it's also exciting.
Sure, Thief 2 has fewer really iconic levels (Trail of Blood and Life of the Party mostly, I suppose). Sure, one level is repeated -- I actually liked that idea because I wasn't a completionist when I first played the game, it got more annoying with subsequent playthroughs. Sure, some levels are very similar in nature or in design to levels in the first game. Sure, there were less supernatural creatures if you don't count the magical automata. In the end, though, I thought the game had a more balanced atmosphere, well laid-out levels and was a bit more immersive.

There's zero confusion about that. I merely mentioned the horn because I first encountered that down in the bonehoard (and if I remember correctly the Dark Project had different darker textures in the bonehoard than it had in Gold).

You definitely are. :laff: Compared to the Thieves' Guild the reboot is a masterful piece of art.
Thief 2 is my hero. Everything that was good in Thief became perfect in Thief 2.

Except the plotting.
