So no one where I live plays Thief, aside from me. I figured, it's time to change that. My question is, which game would you give to a friend for Xmas?
What I'd really like to do is get that collection that contains all three of them that is supposed to work on newer versions of windows. That would save me having to pick just one, and it would make it easier for my friend to run on his computer - I don't want him to get so discouraged just trying to make it run that he doesn't even get to playing it!
Only problem is, I've only seen European versions of this collection. Does it work on American computers? Or is there an American version somewhere that I've missed?
So which one of the best games ever would you give to your friend for Xmas? Which would be the easiest to get into for a potential taffer? Thanks!

theBlackman's bought a couple of the collections over your side of the pond, which had TG in 'em. Maybe get in touch with him and see what he says.
But Elentari bought one (

I would get your friend to play the demo for The Metal Age and see from there.
It's a big complete level based on Life of the Party and it rocks hard.

Yeah, I remember playing that and loving it. That sounds like a good idea

TDP or TMA?
I think the question you should ask yourself is if your friend prefers good graphics (TMA) or good story (TDP). The choice is also between human opponents (TMA) or non-human opponents (TDP). A third choice is between more linear missions (TDP) and more non-linear missions (TMA).
TDP or TG?
If you go for TDP, your next choice is between TDP and TG. These two are very similar, but there are differences: TG has more missions with almost only human opponents. TG also has more "huge mansion"-like (or maze-like) missions.
My personal opinion
If I had to choose only one out of TDP, TG and TMA, then I would choose TDP. It has a stronger story and the missions fit better together. I like dealing with a mix of human and non-human opponents and don't mind if there are more non-human than human opponents in a mission. Each mission had either a small enough size or were varied enough not to get too repetitive.

If you didn't give a set, but only one game, I would choose TDP. As others have mentioned, it is stronger story-wise and it really introduces Garrett's universe the best.

Thief Gold offers much more than three extra missions, but TDP is tighter story-telling, and one TDP mission is modified for Gold in a way that is a sad mistake, and another TDP mission was expanded on in Gold in a really cool way. It's good to have both, really...eventually.

My DVD version is by Mastertronics from EIDOS and has GOLD in it.
I posted some info on it (

All run fine on my XP system. Newer Vcards sometimes have problems, but I would give the DVD set to anyone. It is supposed to run on 98, XP, VISTA.
Good luck

Thanks, I think the DVDs are the way I'm gonna go. Seems like the most solid investment, and it's not that much more expensive to get all 3 than it is to get a complete used copy of T1 or T2. Thank you all for your advice! It was much appreciated :D

I'd get a friend Thief II because from trying to install and run the first two on various computers, it's been the one that gives the least amount of trouble.. And I wouldn't want to have them start of with Thief 3.
And if they complain that it's old with bad graphics, I would slap them and make them play, telling them that I would still buy this game if it were brand new and looked like this.
