I don't know if I'd use the term fad either, but I do think there's a line that was crossed where remaking more or less the exact same classic game just in a contemporary engine could make sense, and Anniversary (2007) could mark that line as well as anything else, although as a matter of tech & gaming-culture I think it became technically possible earlier, anywhere from 2001 to 2004 maybe, but the way of thinking or market-readiness maybe took a bit longer for it to make business sense.

The only good thing in Underworld was the cool Octupus :)

Retro remakes date back pretty damn far. Even as far back as the 80s it was going on, and was even in the early days quite prevalent on consoles. Though ofcourse you had things like Dune 2000 etc much later on.

I've never played a Tomb Raider game before, but I got Legend and Underworld in an Eidos steam pack a few years ago, so I decided to pick up Anniversary after seeing this thread since it was cheap on steam and try that one first. So I fired it up, but it's annoying me already - Lara's in shorts and a tank top in freezing weather, and they immediately kill off the brown guy. I suppose I should just be pleased that her proportions are more realistic than in the early games.

That was annoying in the first game too, Except in that one if you watch the cutscene, you realise Lara actually killed him, Pumped him full of lead long before she dealt with the wolves.
