Hey all. Just curious to see who is a Scotch aficionado like myself. Haven't seen a topic about it, and it'd be nice to see what other people enjoy. I in particular like to sip Glenlivet Scotch while listening to Vivaldi. If I can get my hands on a nice cigar a the same time, all the better heh. Though this choice in Scotch and Music is by no means exclusive. Anyway, what do other people tend to enjoy?

I do, although less so than 5-10 years ago. My favourite would have to be Lagavulin (16 years), which is the perfect combination of rough and smooth for my palate. However, I also like one of the smoother, sweeter Single Malts every now and then; there's nothing wrong with a nice dram of Dalwhinnie.

Love the stuff. But I gotta watch my budget these days, so it's become less of a habit and more of an occasional treat.
My favorite is probably Talisker.
I used to smoke a pipe on rare occasions. When smoking, or when in the mood to sip real slowly, the 18yr Laphroaig is great. But I'm not a big fan of the 10yr Laphroaig which is too sharply Iodine. The 18yr has a deeper, mellower flavor. I used to like Lagavulin but I also find it to be too shaply Iodine for my palate now.
If I'm in the mood for something smoother and mellower but still full flavored, the Balvenie Double Wood is real nice. I tried it for the first time a year or so ago and have kept coming back. Only problem is I tend to drink it too fast. The sherry cask Cragganmore is similar but I stopped drinking it after finding I like the Balvenie better.
Highland Park is another one I come back to occasionally.
If I'm in the mood for Scotch and I'm somewhere that doesn't have a good selection, I'll often just opt for Dewar's. :erm: Yeah, I know.. but It's easy drinking and inoffensive.
I enjoy Scotch with pretty much any kind of music. I was almost a borderline audiophile for a few years, so I definitely like getting immersed in music while sipping a drink.

I have a display cabinet with at last count 50+ single malts in various stages of emptiness/fullness depending upon your outlook in life.
Thing is I rarely drink them. It's a special occasion thing which is why most of them have been there more than ten years. Mind I have to beat my friends off with a stick.
My wife's favourite is Talisker, I prefer Bowmore, Bladnoch (not common) and Scapa.

I used to prefer finer single malts, but over time I have found that many low priced blends are just as good as quite a few high priced single malts (there are exceptions, of course). Quite a few scotches and other single malt whiskeys out there are overpriced for what you get.

@ Zylonbane: Not at all, though the comic is rather amusing. A couple of missed punctuation points hardly constitutes what that implied. I was rather tired when I typed that, so a couple of grammatical irregularities is to be expected. I'm not overtly concerned about it heh. Though, to be fair, a glass of Scotch at the time would have been quite nice.
@ Madwolf and heywood: I've never tried Talisker. How readily available is that in the States? I have yet to see it in any of the places I frequent.
@ Thirith: I definitely agree with the Lagavulin statement. Nice blend of the two notes. Though it's a damn shame that Scotch aged past the 20 year point becomes prohibitively expensive. Though I suppose they'd be destroyed at parties on a regular basis if they were cheap enough to purchase regularly :cheeky:

I've no idea how common Talisker is in the states though I remember Shadowspawn once telling me it was one of his favourites so it's there somewhere. It's readily available in the UK.
There's an excellent (
http://www.welsh-whisky.co.uk/) Welsh Whisky called Penderyn and even an (
http://www.englishwhisky.co.uk/home.html) English one called St. George which I'm dying to try.
As for music to accompany it; Tom Waits naturally. Frank's wild years.

Restaurants and bars that have a Scotch menu will often have it, but it's nowhere near as common as say Macallan. It's relatively easy to find in stores of moderate to large size, but rare in Mom & Pop stores.
