I didn't quite get it. She was after that strange artifact, and knew all about Garrett at the begining of the game. Can anyone help me understand exactly what she was after, and what became of her later in the game?

The Bloodline opal you stole from Rutherford's mansion. That was his wife.

OK. So Lady Elisabeth is the one with the room with the poisons at the top of the tower, right? And Rutherford is having a quarrel with his cousin, right?

Yup. :thumb: She's a Schemer.

Wife of Rutherford, hated him, wanted him out of the way. Of no import in the game, except for "Plot", and never appears other than in notes, or comments.

Never appears? Then what about that blond girl who appears near the beginning of the game, with her two thugs that are hired to kill you? You know, the ones who beat up Heartless Perry (or whatever his name was).

That's Elisabeth.
Unless theses sounds aren't used, she wasn't anybody's wife. The brothers Julian and Ember are fighting over her and the Bloodline Opal. They made a bet and things got ugly. It's turning into a civil war. Garrett removes the two r=things they fight over: the Bloodline Opal and Elizabeth. We don't find out if the brothers stop fighting afterwards.
Elizabeth's IDLE voice files are telling.
eli_idle1:
"The Bloodline Opal...it WILL be mine. Even if I have to kill a hundred people to get it. A thousand. It doesn't matter. All that matters is the Opal. Then I, Lady Elizabeth Nightly Rutherford Fink, will rule the family and Castle Rutherford will be mine."
eli_idle2:
"I want to see the look on their faces...Julian and Ember...when I kick them out on the street. The thought of having to marry one of them! But once the Opal is in my hands...I need not marry. Not Julian, not Ember, not anyone."
About Garrett, eli_idle3:
"He'll try for Stonemarket. That's what his fence said. He'll try to bring the Opal to a fence in Stonemarket. So...we stop him here. Stop him...DEAD."
About Heartless Perry, eli_idle4:
"Maybe we shouldn’t have left that fence alive. That might have been a mistake. Mental note...remember to tie up loose ends more neatly in the future. Yes, it would have been just as easy to kill him and dump his body somewhere...the dead pits. I won't make the same mistake again."
eli_idle5:
"They'll be wondering where I am, back at Rutherford Castle. They'll all be having dinner right about now...none of them suspecting that I'll soon have the Opal."
CASelizabethjournal:
"Lady Elizabeth's Journal, page 52
This house is not safe for me - my spy tells me Julian is planning a bloody return. I spend my evenings in the city to avoid this, but still I go armed day and night with blade and venom. If necessary I can flee at a moment's notice, with the little treasure I acquired from the armory. Until then, I have this sham marriage to make with a sham husband - I care not which of them it is now, the arsenic will do for either. Ember touched me again today - just on the hand, but it was horrible. Interesting letter from Lady Warwick. Ember's suffering must be exquisite. Watching his only friend slowly waste away to nothing - better than any poison I could deliver."
