Ok, I've been playing undead missions forever now and never had a problem with zombies. Last night, I decided to start playing through TDP again on expert.
Bafford's was a cakewalk. One minute into Cragscleft, I started hearing zombie moans........omgomgomgomg and quit to Windows as quickly as I could.
What's wrong with me?! This is the first time I've ever been scared!

Too much caffeine causing an anxiety attack? Stress? Have you been awake for too long?

I feel your pain.
Maybe we can form a group to battle our zombiephobia. :laff:
I think they're scarier in the early thief games because they had a knack of sneaking up on you and those moans always had me looking over my shoulder in case they were following me.

This is an old game, yet it still causes reactions, and still gives us goose bumps sometimes. Gotta love it. Part of it, I think, is the sounds. Thief has got the greatest sounds in any game, I think.

I think I forgot how black everything is. I had been used to playing T2 for a long time, where everything is just really dark but still polished looking. TDP, on the other hand, everything has a grungy, dirty, rough feeling to it, and I don't just mean the graphics.

I can't play Thief I because of the zombies in the second level.
I just actually can't.

I would encourage you to challenge that fear. You're missing some great stuff.

I know how thou must feel, brother!
But one day you just have to come out of the closet, step in the light, grab your sword and charge at the zombie... And then notice how horrible it face looks like, reload your save and hide in the corner, shaking in terror.
Seriously though, just remember that they, like any other creature, can be hid from. If you're still feeling nervous you can just backstab them in some corner where they aren't blocking your way. Basically it's no different from blackjacking, just don't get too close to the corpse afterwards.
Besides, most missions offer enough equipment to take care of all the zombies if you just don't waste it. It is partially thanks to this that I managed to finish RTC on expert (the haunts scare me very little when compared to the spooks I get from those walking corpses).
I believe I am no less scared of zombies than you are, and still I only recently managed to finish The Inverted Manse. Crypt and undead missions in general are something I always return to. It might have to do with the inspiring locations, but I think that the scares are part of the reason I play them. It is very rewarding to finish such a mission and the relief of returning to a normal mission with living guards afterwards cannot be described with words.
If you give up you're going to miss a lot.
