Only GTA I tried on PC was GTA 3 and that ran really crappy. Only good thing about the PC version of that was being able to put your own music in + the better resolutions. Other than that I preferred the ps2 version.

Nah, I have that too and remember it fondly as being good fun with a better than average soundtrack. It was quite clearly ported from playstation with the absolute minimum of effort, though.

Upgrade your PC. That Pentium 2's doing you no favours.

Yeah, I thought the III series games were fine for optimisation as I played them on a computer theoretically identical to an xbox 1 in hardware and they were far better than the PS2 version even at that min spec. And not just because I hate auto aim.
Mind you I didn't play III itself, just VC and SA.

I do remember GTA III being really choppy at the time, and subsequently really impressed than Vice City ran so much better.

I distinctly remember them using all new, far more detailed textures (I don't know if they were higher res though, wouldn't surprise me if they were) for the PC version of GTA3. After sinking several hours into the PS2 version I recall watching my mate playing GTA3 on his PC, the textures looked worlds better.
These newer textures were carried over to the Xbox 1 version, since they ported it from PC.
I recall being disappointed playing the "expansion pack", Liberty City Stories for PS2, that was released several years later, since they used the original textures GTA3 PS2 textures.

I was using a good PC at the time. Was just a lot of choppiness and sound clipping issues. Got really annoying after a while. I tried all the different sound options for the sound clipping and could never find a solution to it.
Listening to "Brainbug - Nightmare" while cruising the red light district sure was pretty awesome though :).

My PC was a pile of shit for the time. The game ran okay. So I dunno what your deal was.

It's a shame that after the promising opening it veered away from the urban cop style of things into a more shootery kind of thing. I loved arresting people for trumped up reasons.

Yeah, arresting people for minor misdemeanours was one of the things that sticks in mind. I don't remember much about the latter half of the game, come to think of it.
