So demagogue's brilliant thread really made me start thinking about something I've thought of off and on over the last few years.
The vast majority of the people who were once regular posters have moved on for whatever reason. As far as I can tell, the forum has finally stopped bleeding members at any significant rate; those who will leave have left, and it seems like most of the remainders are, for better or worse, in it for the long haul.
So my question to you is: why are you still here? Not saying you shouldn't be, but what made you stay once membership dwindled and got a bit quiet? Old friends? Discussion you can't get elsewhere? Nostalgia?
I'll answer my own question later on, but I'd like to hear others first.

I can't find my way back out :(

:cheeky: Posts like that are why I'm still here. :p

I don't post very often but I do come here every day because any other forum I've frequented, with a mind to hanging out for a while, has always paled in comparison to this place*. You might all be a bunch of miserable bastards, but you're my kind of miserable bastards. :D
* In all categories. I even think our fuckwits and trolls are of a higher quality. :P Well some of them, anyway.

- Keeping in touch with friends and acquaintances made, who aren't online on other sites I visit or partake of.
- Categorical information not found elsewhere, or at least not as easily, not in my language, or in as great a quantity.
- It's one of a couple of sites where I can talk about some of my hobbies without holding back.
- Hoping for the first flashes of news on anticipated entertainment media.
Other than that, there's a dwindling nostalgia that means less and less as what I was once passionate about being here for has more or less gone, along with my ability to be productive. I'm glad I was able to give back some of what I given.
As for this: "He likes taking up the mantle of being 'the' gung-ho fan." I mostly don't like it, especially with so many favorite fellow fans to look up to no longer around. I love looking up answers to fan questions, mainly. I still have next to nothing I enjoy about gaming in general, but Thief--minus TDS--happened to be great fun again. I still hope for an Internetless and electricity-less version of the Thief Universe, for informing fan-fiction and creative projects like pen-and-paper RPGs with locals, which was the main thing that drove me to collect so much info to begin with, but mostly just to follow through and finish the work. Mostly for naught in the end, aside from the learning and nice experiences.

For me I'm someone who HATES change, I've always loved the preference towards System Shock / Thief / Deus Ex here, plus there is alot of people with similar minds to myself on things. Plus I think when you start frequenting a place whether be in the real world or here on the internet you get used to the people after a while. And whilst the names and faces might change over time, its still home. And yeah that's my reason.

Now bend over and bite on this riding crop.

I came here because I started dromeding in Japan back in 2000 to keep myself from getting homesick, without internet access, long before I even knew anyone else was doing it. Then when I found others that were, it struck a chord. Then I guess I just invested enough in the scene it's not worth just tossing it.
Also, practically speaking, I have some itch where I like to write as it is, and forums stoke that itch, so I like to have a place to write about things that interest me. I have to actually hold myself back to be thoughtful for other people, which I want to be. But I'd rather it be around a culture that speaks to me, which TTLG has... It's not too in the gutter, but it doesn't take itself too seriously or too abstracted from the fun parts of life either. I don't know if I've found another scene that didn't fall into one or the other of those. So that's probably what's kept me on a forum, and then this one in particular.

Ah it was just a silly game we were playing so I wouldn't take all that seriously anyway. It's all meant in a good spirit & in fun. As you might know I've always been a great devotee of the game myself and I like pretty much of all the ThiefGen crowd & share their enthusiasm, you included. :)

It was coming from you, so I took it as such, but decided here, not there, to mention it. I love it when others contribute in depth, so thanks, man.
