Well, conversations are usually very frank. Often entertaining. And every now and then even intelligent. Now that's a rare combo around the internets.
Came for BioShock. Then I discovered there's a Deus Ex section, that was a sure-fire way to get my attention. Then GenGaming, etc. So yeah, community grew on me. It's either TTLG or e-mails, that's what I usually hit first once my browser comes up.

I don't post much, but I browse pretty much every day. I think a lot of the folks here, despite umm...'discussions', have very similar tastes in gaming, not just specific titles and genres - but also certain design characteristics that transcend genre. Most folks here are able to discuss my absolute favourite thing in the world, video games, intellectually and intelligently. I value almost everyone's opinion here even if I don't agree with it, because I'd guess for most of us, it is a passion that transcends OMG PS3 IZ BETTAR THAN XBAWKS type discussion. People justify their opinion; there is credibility and validity in even some of the most inane posts. Sure there are exceptions, when things descend into namecalling, pointless arguing etc, but in my perception, that's a minority.
I've seen other forums related to many different subjects. They are scary. Horrible. Some cling to life with 'forum games', others full of flamewars that should have long been put to sleep. Some are populated with unrelatable idiots wrapped up in their own elitism, others pretty much act as a place where people go to ask a question once, say some technical query, then never return, subsequently lacking any sense of community. At least ttlg flamewars make me laugh - often end up being rather witty, there are recognisable names on here with recognisable personalities. New members often seem to have it tough, but when their contribution is valuable, it is recognised by the rest of the community.
The standard of discussion on here always seems to be pretty damn high. If I compare it to other forums, I guess that most folks on TTLG are adults. Makes a change from most gaming forums I've seen that seem to be filled with teenagers, excited at the prospect of semi-anonymous expression, usually resulting in inane, aggressive nonsense. Saying that, I was maybe around 11 when I signed up to TTLG, hence the stupid fully capped screenname that makes no sense, and I reckon that, at the time, I fitted in with the above teenage description. Yet TTLG must've taught me something over these 10 years - that the internet can play host to reasonable, interesting, witty, intelligent and occasionally insane discussion. I don't post often, because in my mind, it's something I only feel like contributing to if I think I've got something I think is worth saying. It's not always the case, but I keep that philosophy in mind and often think twice before submitting a post. I'm sure there are many other forums like it, but this one is mine. Love and hugs!:D

Came for Thief.
But that was just the gateway in. I find there is good conversation to be had here, opinions that aren't all "no u!", taste - in everything; games, music, film but above all a community of varied and cool characters. Seriously, though there are some wild opinions and much dickheadery it's all part of the flavour and other forums I'm a member of just don't have that... je ne sais qua that TTLG does. I reckon it stems from the fact that we all got here via taste in a particular type of games and so somehow there is something common within us all.

I come here to plagiarize wit and humor, which I find myself generally lacking, and use it on other forums and in real life.
Also, the punctuation and spelling is impeccable.

I actually came for Thief too. I'd just gotten hold of Thief Gold (author of a webcomic I read at the time reviewed Thief 3 and I was like THAT SOUNDS AWESOME) and was trying to figure out how to get it going. I lurked for about 5 months before registering, and I was a big lurker for quite a while until about 2007 when I started posting regularly.

I'd like to make fun of you for playing Thief when Thief 3 came out, but that's so 11 years ago...

In my defense I deliberately started with Thief Gold.

I guess in a way there was no avoiding coming here.
TBH the gateway into TTLG for me was Tomb Raider. Eidos was publisher for Deus Ex AND Thief. So I bought thief because of the demo I downloaded.. because of the ad in the pamphlet that came with tomb raider 2. System Shock was a fluke. A friend of mine had a Pentium 100mhz back in the day, and it was the fastest computer any of us had ever seen. His older brother had the original floppy version of SShock and it was installed on the whopping 1gb hdd. We stumbled on it by accident and became addicted. So when ss2 came out and I played the demo, after having already played thief and deus ex, I found a copy of ss2 and needed to get it working in windows 2000.
Thief, Deus Ex, and System Shock. Where else would I have come? And all because of Tomb Raider.
