To be honest if some of my favourite reading venues (AVClub, certain news sites) had a community feature with some consistent membership and opportunity for commentary outside of isolated articles, there's a good chance my active involvement here would be slim to none. I'd be a serial lurker like so many others have become. As it is, I get some of my jollies off by commenting on movies, politics and other shit here, but the place that I would post threads about my kids being born or my upcoming wedding isn't really this place anymore.
Not to dissent with the sentiments expressed so far, but I'm not still here for the intelligent conversation - as I see it that exists only as tiny islands in a churning sea of crap - the sad truth is I'm here because instinctual internet practice for me is to open a browser and open a tab with TTLG by default. Nostalgia and habit.
To top it all off, the dominant rise of social networking means that I have connections with many of my favourite TTLGers away from TTLG - the fact that they too post here less and less over time doesn't help matters.
My lifestyle doesn't allow for gaming anymore either... so there's that.

Wow. What a downer.

When you say your lifestyle doesnt allow gaming do you mean the time factor? Or social pressure or just a pure non-inclination for gaming anymore? Maybe when your kids get a bit older you will return to the fold, I've certainly raised my kids to know what good games are!

Well, demagogue's thread did have that dual effect of making me cheerful with the current content while being sad at the loss or lack of several posters NPC'd there.

I'd say a combo of both. Time is definitely the dominant factor, I've found that given the absence of it my passions have crystallised somewhat with my preferences forming along the lines of Movies & TV > Cooking > Reading > * and games have squarely fallen into the catch-all * category. I realised this when Portal 2 had been out for ages and despite positive press and loving the original, that I had no desire whatsoever to look it up. Maybe someday...

I much prefer this sort of media to "social media" like Facebook. I'd much rather be the Real Me behind a pseudoym, than be the Fake Me behind my real name on FB, because "being yourself" on social media outlets can be dangerous, if you wish to keep your job/retain employability within this current corporatist atmosphere.
Social media has become yet another way for employers to monitor/disqualify you. Do you really want details of your life online? Where does that really put you?
Friendly Fascism is upon us, folks.

If a company doesn't want to hire me because of a picture of me online skulling a glass of wine wearing a kilt and cuddling the man I love, I don't want to work for that company.

Did I say man, I meant woman... My life for an edit function!

So much for pointed commentary

I would hope that the point stands whether you're cuddling a man or a woman you love! :D
