Back to the topic at hand...
I showed up for Thief discussion, and stay for that, but lately (last year or so), I've probably browsed GenGaming more than anything. To me, it's a great forum for finding out about new games and getting solid opinions about them. My gaming tastes adhere very close to the average opinion around here, way more so than any site out there. And, let's face it, there's some funny mofos over there, good for a decent laugh every now and then.
Also, for messing around with Dromed, where else would you even go besides the TEG? This should probably be a site in itself. I love that there's an active group over there trying (and genuinely interested) in keeping Thief alive over a decade since it was released. That forum just rocks.
As far as CommChat goes...somehow, I find myself browsing through it occasionally, and usually regret that I do. TBH, while there are a few good posts and some good people, there's also a lot of pretentious a-holes, rude jerkoffs, and sad saps longing for the old days. IMO, I'm not sure why you'd come to TTLG to talk about politics or world events, unless you were already here talking games. There's a contingent that falls into that category (users who only visit CommChat), which strikes me as a little pathetic. But hey, do what you want with your time, what do I care.
So in short, I came for the games, and stay for the games. This is a gaming site, right?

Wow, I was thinking of that while I was logging... and here's the topic!
Well, first of all, I come here a couple times per year to see whether something absolutely new appeared.
You know, a LOT has changed since I was an active member of TTLG. But I still remember the times, so the second answer is nostalgia. It was really cool back then... actually, when you say things like that you officially agree that you're old... but damn, it was really cool!
:p

I'm still cool.
...or so my mom says...:(

On the other hand, I reckon only ever utilizing a place filled with interesting people from around the world and from all walks of life
only to chat about gaming ... is not just pathetic but a massive missed opportunity.
People obviously arrived here at some stage through games but why should that be the only thing that continue to define it's membership?

To be clear, I did say "users that only visit CommChat." But yeah, my apologies on the wording, "pathetic" was way too strong a word - maybe "confusing" is more appropriate.

I guess some people stick around for the community and its people (even if you find it too caustic yourself) but aren't really into gaming anymore?

I post in CommChat a little less than I used to; partly because I have nothing to contribute. But I still come here and I still read everything.
I couldn't live without GenGaming though.

Only or not, it's not just a strong word to use, I think it's myopic for the reasons I stated. I've learned a hell of a lot from the posters we've had through the years and the ones still with us, sadly there's not as many anymore or they aren't posting to the same output as before though.
My point was that we all got here by gaming but what does it matter to anyone else why people choose to stay.

The better question might be why do some post so seldom or quit. I like to think they are living lives of dangerous intrigue fighting Somali pirates by day and plowing great swathes of broken hearts by night.
