Back to the topic at hand...
I showed up for Thief discussion, and stay for that, but lately (last year or so), I've probably browsed GenGaming more than anything. To me, it's a great forum for finding out about new games and getting solid opinions about them. My gaming tastes adhere very close to the average opinion around here, way more so than any site out there. And, let's face it, there's some funny mofos over there, good for a decent laugh every now and then.
Also, for messing around with Dromed, where else would you even go besides the TEG? This should probably be a site in itself. I love that there's an active group over there trying (and genuinely interested) in keeping Thief alive over a decade since it was released. That forum just rocks.
As far as CommChat goes...somehow, I find myself browsing through it occasionally, and usually regret that I do. TBH, while there are a few good posts and some good people, there's also a lot of pretentious a-holes, rude jerkoffs, and sad saps longing for the old days. IMO, I'm not sure why you'd come to TTLG to talk about politics or world events, unless you were already here talking games. There's a contingent that falls into that category (users who
only visit CommChat), which strikes me as a little pathetic. But hey, do what you want with your time, what do I care.
So in short, I came for the games, and stay for the games. This is a gaming site, right?
This is embarassing. I wrote up a post that is almost word-for-word what Brethren said. I am just going to quote big B and be done with it.

Really? I tend to think rather the opposite. Real people talking about real things that happen in real life is always going to be more interesting to me. I like an occasional game and visit gengaming but aside from wasn't it cool when so and so happened it strikes me as a silly thing to invest so much time in talking about. A game is a thing you do and be done with. People aren't and there is a great range and depth to most of them if you can coax them to share it. Life is so much more interesting when there are more colors on the palate than games and comm chat is wide open to it all- except gaming. I like people and getting to see a slice of thier life. I don't even mind the odd ass now and then but then I'm not a pussy who can't take a bit of ribbing and I hold no grudges.
Better to light a candle because cursing in the dark is what is pathetic. If you find the place so awful then try to fix it or stay the fuck out. You won't be missed if all you can do is diss those who are here and care about what is going on in the lives and heads of others here. Besides, we know that somebody has to fight the Somali pirates and good riddance. Folks gripe about this place as if they didn't know it was peopled by us- YOU and me.

I like talking about real world stuff and games. The thing about gaming is that it gives us a world we've all shared. It's like when people meet from the same city, even though they're just meeting, they can talk about landmarks they both know and the culture of that place. It's a natural thing for them to talk about. For us, everyone comes from different worlds, but we've all played a lot of the same games, so we can talk about things we've seen in them, situations we've all been in, and it's more than just like books or movies because they were places we've actually *been* in some respect, walking around. Of course it's just fantasy, but it's still us in there, well us through some avatar. I don't know what I'm really trying to say... I guess it's just understandable why people like to talk about games as much as real world stuff. That's in addition to gamers tending to have similar personalities and worldviews and all that (obviously not always!).

I was going to go all "RAAARRR WHAT YOU SAY" on the "a game is a thing you do and be done with" line, but I realize that wasn't really the core of Tocky's post. But yeah, suffice it to say that - when it comes to TTLG - one builds off the other. I certainly wouldn't be here had it not been a gaming forum, and while each area has it issues I tend to find they complement each other.

It's making a connection of whatever sort.
I come here because it's the only place I don't get any grief. And that's probably why I don't post in CommChat much - I want to keep it that way. :)

Intelligent conversation from a bunch of crazies.... Nowhere else like it.

I've just realised that I also come here for comfort and distraction in times of trouble. Having one of those shitty days that you hope you won't have again, I've happily distracted myself with testing Thief fan missions and seeing what CommChatters are chatting about. And all of it helps - even the bad bits. :D

It's like this... erh...sort of.
Majority of forums out there in cyber space would be the scientific equivalent of E=MC2
TTLG :thumb: is the scientific equivalent of neutrinos in motion at a well to do funeral parlor while laying to rest the notion of "being" more than one dimension.
And that's just a start...or would it be a continuation... after the start.

The only reason I can think of is that I seem to recall someone here called me a geek once, which seemed ridiculous. Not that I post much now. In fact I was never a prolific poster. But I do keep coming back.

I would have called you a sheep-shagger. Hope this helps
