why do people like to make fun of new immigrants?
they've been called names and made a mockery of for their lack of ability to speak and write english
well i lived in the uk so i wouldn't know, but i've seen it happen when i was studying in USF as an exchange student where a fellow asian student didn't know how to use the computer nor type and everyone in class frequently made fun of him when he raised his hand to ask something. from what i hear this kind of thing is quite common even in Junior high school and not just prevalent in the america working class society. what do you think?

It's for the same reason the world likes to make fun of Americans, people in every culture make fun of people outside their culture, people make fun of differences, it's easier to mock than make an effort to build bridges or show tolerance. It may have nothing to do with being an immigrant, but may involve anti-illegal-immigrant prejudices, as well as envy, jealousy, and comeuppance, and as you've just demonstrated, offensive generalizations against whole groups that do not apply to all within. Nevermind the wars, brutality, and crimes against "outsiders". Go anywhere, and you will eventually see how much hatred there is against even just regional and cultural dialects and accents, complexion, physiological differences, and in a country where there is great diversity, there are infinite divisions, but ignorance and intolerance are universal to the human condition. Bring in enough difference and someone will be offensive about it. Right now, in the U.S., there is a lot of unresolved anger, and it's not going away anytime soon. No one is immune, just more fortunate or unfortunate.

Because America was founded on the principal of each newly assimilated immigrant group making fun of the next in line. We're like a racist-joke-pyramid-scheme in that regard.

Yes, there are racists in every country on this planet...also you can break it down beyond racism: people within countries hate other parts of the land, same within cities and even estates. Aliens R`nt Us, no sir.
In UK/US it grates so much more for all the claims of moral superiority/world leadership. English can be particularly nasty because they`re all smiles up front but when you turn your back sniggering commences. It might have to do with Lost Empire or inability to speak other languages thou...

Eh, gringos are just as guilty as the rest of the World. They simply get some extra bad rep in part due to the extra attention the World pays it (and the media usually doesn't help).
