I never even thought about it until now. But if Hammer haunts are dead Hammerites whose souls were never left to rest, why do they use swords (Thief 1 and 2, not 3)?
Was there an earlier time period or generation where Hammerites traditionally carried swords instead of Hammers?

It's because the hammers are holy, and the undead cannot touch them.
They carry hammers in T2 and 3 because the developers forgot.

I find it hard to believe the undead Hammerites rose up and thought "Damn we can't use these hammers. Let's go and get some swords".
The uniform could be holy as well, so I think that anything holy they were in contact with lost its holiness as soon as they became undead.
As for swords, it could be that the old Hammerites only carried the hammer for ceremonial purposes and used swords for fighting. The hammers might not even have been blessed back then. That could be something they did afterwards in case of another undead uprising.

Even if hammers were not holy per se, there is still a lot of symbolism in giving them different weapons than their living counterparts.

We adopted the T1 reason for our Builder Haunts in Dark Mod as well. Makes sense...they're cast offs.

Also because the haunt's speed and skill is a lot more believable with a sword and sword animations than with the hammer equivalents, also note that in T2 even though they have hammers again they still use the sword animations for the same reason, as little sense as they make on a closer look.

haunts wield hammers AFAIK. I wonder though where a "living" Hammerite with a sword appears in TDS. :confused:
