At the very early stage of development the Hammerites had swords:

Was it intentional or they just didn't have proper animation / model for a hammer at that time — I don't know. The fact is, the Hammerites received their hammers lately, but Haunts didn't. Maybe the Hammerite's animation didn't fit for Haunt model, or they just forgot to make similar changes.

One theory I'm making up right as I type is based on the idea that there may be some sort of possession here:
Murus: "These haunts who inhabit the bodies of my brethren--they must all be killed."
If they are possessed, after their graves have been desecrated, then they may be wielding swords instead of hammers because they are NOT Hammerites, but spirits in Hammerite bodies.

They're Haunts. They're the greatest thing ever made so they can whield whatever kind of a weapon they want :D

The T3 Hammer
haunts wield hammers AFAIK. I wonder though where a "living" Hammerite with a sword appears in TDS.

Correct. I don't remember any Hammerites with swords though.

ZylonBane's comment. ;)
1. The Hammer is a holy symbol.
2. Haunts are unholy and abhorrent to Hammerites.
3. A Haunt is not really a Hammerite, and they are the product of unholy desecration of the Hammerites' graves.
Although we only see and make small Holy Symbol hammers, it may be that all the Hammerite-made hammers have some holy quality. Or maybe it's just because the Haunts aren't Hammerites, so they use what they know.
Now if the Haunts moved around like extra strong and extra fast T1 Ape Beasts....:sly:
I wonder, then, if Venik Kilgor's hammers were less holy, or if they could be made holy, otherwise it would be another form of corruption within the Order. Like the inferior Shemenov-made blade that Tarius purchased instead of one made by Hammerite smiths. Don't mind me... :)

I hope ZylonBane is not the developer Digi referred to. Is there any old chatlog etc.? :erg: However, if we don't want to declare the TDP intro movie and older screenshots as non-canonical - what about swords being a weapon for some ranks among the Hammerites and that something concerning them changed in the last fifty years (or even directly after the cataclysm where swords proved useless)?
Or maybe LG noticed that Hammerites should be wielding hammers and not swords. Or they thought casting hammers wouldn't be considered as unrealistic as casting swords and using them right after.

ZB the Dev?:joke:
Naw. What are you referring to there? Ya got me curious.
The pikes and axes and Hammers with swords with no hammers in sight in the intros should've been in the game. I know I thought I would see that stuff before I played through. It took TDS to show a Hammer with a sword and Garrett with a dagger, but still no axes or pikes, or halberds. Since they are in the intro, I have nothing against seeing them in-game, someday.

Hammers with swords is dumb, it's an integral part of their scripture how the hammer is fit for any task.

Heh heh.:cheeky:

I recall reading a similar thread where someone jokingly explained this with a hammerite waking up in the morning and accidentally picking up a sword instead of a hammer. Instant curse.
