It appears Ive created a monster through this discussion, so maybe I should put it to rest. Lets just say there both excelent, excelent games, and we're all entitled to our opinions.
I just think Thief 2 is better. Your welcome to think different.

While I've got no real preference over the games there is one thing that bugs me about thief 2 sometimes. The forced ghosting.
You can get mines, fire and gas arrows, flash bombs, potions and so on to use. And then you suddenly get into a mission where you can use none of them. Casing the joint for example, I picked up over 2500 loot in the previous mission and all I could spend it on was water arrows. Not really an interesting mission to me although this might just be me. Anyone else agree or disagree?

KALJERICO=Maybe it's something like Syphon Filter 3. The weapons they give you in some of the missions is like they closed their eyes and randomly selected the starting equipment.
But it could also be because CtJ is the first Thief II mission that involves 'all-ghosting' regardless of what difficullty ('Framed' is not counted because the normal and hard do not require ghosting).

I just don't really like ghosting, it doesn't interest me to be honest. Being forced to do so just irritates me. Especially as I then had very little loot to spend on enough equipment to repeat the mansion, only this time with more guards and robots.
Though the lost city repeat was impressive so I've still got an equalish opinion of the games. :)

I find ghosting fun. Makes the game more challenging and well, interesting. You might see things you might not have seen while bonking everyone on the head and rushing off to find the next stash of loot.
I've played CtJ a million times but I still find it tough. I remembered the first time I played it. Missions which FORCES you to ghost aren't fun. There's no feeling of real accomplishment. Plus CtJ is just hard. They jumped too quickly. It took me by surprise as well.

Thief 1 had no individual standout missions, only sporadic moments of brilliance (such as first entering that crypt). Thief 2, on the other hand, gave me "Ambush!" and "Life of the Party", simply awesome missions which I feel encapsulate what 'Thief' is about. Also, as already mentioned, T2 actually felt more like being a Master Thief than T1 did. Garrett came into his own here, thieving like we would expect him to without being tied to a plot (e.g. Shipping & Receiving, but also the Bank, which was linked to the story).

the atmosphere in thief was much better than thief 2, despite 2 having better graphics. thief was medieval while thief 2 was more victorian. thief and thief 2 had great missions, but thief's story captivated me a bit more. i loved all of the tools in thief 2 better than thief. i really really hope thief 3 goes back to a medieval style with that updated engine. that'll make my day

Erm, in Thief II I don't recall a single mission where Garrett sets out to steal a valuable treasure for himself, the only mission that vaguely resembles that is Shipping and Receiving, but he's only stealing little bits here and there. Nearly every mission in T2 involves Garrett risking life and limb just for INFORMATION. Not even in Bank or Masks did Garrett acquire some priceless trinket for himself (smaller items but nothing major), the big items were used for information.
To be honest I felt more like a tool than a thief while playing Thief II. Instead of great thieving opportunities it's more like missed opportunities

^ What he said.
Thief 1, on the other hand, has that kind of missions (ie. Bafford's, Bonehoard, Assassins etc.). At the beginning, you're stealing valuable stuff (Bafford's scepter, the Horn of Quintus) to fence it off and make money off it, or getting revenge on somebody who tried to kill you (Ramirez). The fact that the missions are all linked to form a plot is irrelevant... you start with simple thievery, then things start to go weird. That's introducing a plot. Thief 2 took you by the hair and dunked you into a plot out of the blue.

At the very least, how can any sane taffer not consider "Return to the Cathedral" a standout mission?
Anyway, ditto Abysmal and SE. For most of T2 you weren't a thief, you were
Garrett: Secret Agent Man.
