It also has Life of the Party, which just about makes up for all of the shortcomings you listed (though I like Soulforge).
Definitely. When I first saw the tower I just sat there and stared at it, thinking how cool that looked. :)

The Dark Project is lush and gritty - it is deep and organic and almost dreamlike.... The Metal Age is waking up from the dream - the city, once vibrant, has become cold and sterile; vegetation has given way to looming towers and frightening machines, obscured by a thick haze but discernible by their grinding drone... The world is different now and the game reflects that wonderfully. A bad level or two does not tarnish the overall appearance, and I for one, am glad that Looking Glass Studios made two games that can evoke these vivid images in entirely unique ways.
Your descriptions almost makes me play them again. :) Maybe I should ... :)

Oh no question that TMA had some stellar missions. It just had some really lame ones too. And it was generally more rushed in development than TDP was.
So when someone comes along and spouts "I don't understand why people like the first one so much better!", well... there are some pretty darn good reasons.

Good question...
Thief II had longer, more complex and involved levels (and more of them), more refined gameplay, and improved sound and visuals.
Thief I on the other hand gets credit for being "The Original". It's environments were often more unpredictable and plain-out freaky (Bonehoard, the Old Quarter, the Lost City before the Mechs "found" it, Constantine's digs and Maw). Having such unusual levels made for a more engaging experience. Plus, there's something about it... When I play the first Thief, even in more "mundane" levels like Bafford's manor, I get a feeling of serious tension I don't always get in TMA. Same thing with the level-briefing cutscenes. Thief's chill me to the bone. TMA's don't do the same thing.

Yah, Thief:TMA had some lame missions. Some of them I never came back to once I beat them. Also, for some reason I prefer the briefings (not the cutscenes) from TDP than in TMA.
I personally thought the storyline in TDP progressed rather poorly. Sure there should be a few missions to set up the storyline and mood for the city before we enter a new world, but six missions?! That feels like way too much filler. TMA's story, on the other hand, moved at a much more balanced rate in my view. Maybe it was fast in certain sections, but it never lagged behind, and everything that happened was a part of the story.
Also, TMA felt more realistic. I mean in terms of the level design. TDP gave us the creepiest opera house ever. What noble would want to go there? It was so spooky...
I hope nobody takes this the wrong way. As I mentioned before I really like both games close to equal. That's why I like the variety in them, so that I can play either one and have them feel like completely different games. I just have to intervine when people start saying, "TDP was better than TMA because it had style", or, "TDP was so much better, TMA was boring (or lame or crappy)".

Opera is in TG. That's why i prefer TDP over TG anytime. Opera and mages towers and modified lost city are completely out of place IMO. For example Opera is clearly TMA level. TDP is medieval and TMA is victorian.

One thing that I did prefer in TG (or TDP) is the whole "exploration" dealy. In TMA you are always in a confined area (like a city or indoors, except for Trail of Blood, which I loved). TG had lots more areas to explore, most of them felt "out of this world". Outdoor enviroments have to be my favorite. I would like to see more forest or swamp levels.

I think Thief 2 did a better job of sticking to 'being a Thief' but it went off too far in the other direction and became a bit too sterile. The Dark Project was a bit too far in the spooks direction.
I loved both games, but TDP was the stronger title for me, despite going off into spookland. The story was stronger and better fleshed out.

I definitely don't! I like TMA much more than TDP/TG.
