"Why does everyone prefer Thief 1 to Thief 2?"
I'm not sure that thats an accurate statement.
T2 is a mildly newer engine for FM's,
but they're both 2 of the best games in game history.
Only rivaled by the HL/gold or gamebryo engines.
They should both be in the top ten!
Which after all the games in the world is easily equivalent and interchangeable.

At last. After nearly ten years and ten pages worth of replies, every one of them slavishly agreeing that everyone prefers Thief 1 to Thief 2, someone
finally rises up to challenge the thread's thesis. I salute you sir!

Oh no...... busted!:o:wot::sweat::(
I admit ashamedly I never did do detailed polls and surveys. I never hung around shopping malls with a notepad asking passersby which game they prefered. I never did telephone market research on which game they and their friends and family preferred. I foolishly misread this thread as why would people think Thief 1 is a more enjoyable game! For 10 years I've been living a lie!!! :eww:
I can't live with the shame. I must do 10 years of penance immediately.

You honestly don't realize how hilariously and utterly wrong this statement is, do you?

I hate Thief 2, I still don't understand how they could turn the amazing masterpiece that is The Dark Project into the atmosphere-less trash (with ROBOTS!) that is Thief 2. But unfortunately there have been other cases like that in the games industry: Mafia and Mafia 2, Deus Ex and the sequels, the new 'hitman' etc.
The choice to "include robots" in Thief II goes beyond and deeper than your humble understanding of not only the Thief series, but the history of crpg in general. I do agree however that The Dark Project is indeed an amazing masterpiece.

Robots don't belong in the Thief universe and although I hated them they were least of my concerns in T2.

Truth is under no obligation to be witty, Dumbass. Your statement that "no other game has anyone caring this far back" is categorically wrong. The Thief series is 14 years old at this point. That is a mere child in computer gaming terms, considering that computer gaming has existed for (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_video_game) at least fifty years now. To assert that, out of all the thousands of games released for the dozens of major platforms in that time period, Thief is the
only one that people still care about, is delusionally hyperbolic. Let's take a look at just a few prominent examples--
Half-Life (1998): (
http://www.blackmesasource.com/) A recent remake that you may have heard of.
Doom (1993): (
http://www.doomworld.com/) Still has an active playing, modding, and programming community.
Duke Nukem 3D (1996): (
http://forums.duke4.net/forum/30-duke-nukem-3d-and-eduke32/) Ditto.
Fallout (1997): (
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/) Yeah, tell these guys they don't care anymore.
Wasteland (1988): So many people still care, they (
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/) funded an official sequel.
NetHack (1987): (
http://www.nethack.org/) Still being played 25 years later.
Elite (1984): Numerous (
http://forum.classicamiga.com/forum/showthread.php/4501-Elite-remakes) fan remakes over the years, and now (
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous) an official sequel attempt.
So yeah. Maybe in the future you'll consider sobering up before posting.
