Truth is under no obligation to be witty, Dumbass. Your statement that "no other game has anyone caring this far back" is categorically wrong. The Thief series is 14 years old at this point. That is a mere child in computer gaming terms, considering that computer gaming has existed for (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_video_game) at least fifty years now. To assert that, out of all the thousands of games released for the dozens of major platforms in that time period, Thief is the
only one that people still care about, is delusionally hyperbolic. Let's take a look at just a few prominent examples--
Half-Life (1998): (
http://www.blackmesasource.com/) A recent remake that you may have heard of.
Doom (1993): (
http://www.doomworld.com/) Still has an active playing, modding, and programming community.
Duke Nukem 3D (1996): (
http://forums.duke4.net/forum/30-duke-nukem-3d-and-eduke32/) Ditto.
Fallout (1997): (
http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/) Yeah, tell these guys they don't care anymore.
Wasteland (1988): So many people still care, they (
http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/) funded an official sequel.
NetHack (1987): (
http://www.nethack.org/) Still being played 25 years later.
Elite (1984): Numerous (
http://forum.classicamiga.com/forum/showthread.php/4501-Elite-remakes) fan remakes over the years, and now (
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous) an official sequel attempt.
So yeah. Maybe in the future you'll consider sobering up before posting.
Hostile little man...lol

There was nothing hostile about ZB's response, so I can only assume you're just pissed because he thoroughly refuted your statement.

Every post ZB makes is hostile. I was somewhat upset by this until learned that Zylonbane is actually Dolores Blumenkranz, a 72 year old grandmother from Brooklyn. She's a sweet thing at heart really, she just likes to poke fun at the youngsters.:D

Robots don't belong in the Thief universe and although I hated them they were least of my concerns in T2.
Robots belonged in the Thief universe more so than haunts & zombies. But then, we all know how I feel about zombies.

I've always preferred Thief 2 to Thief 1. I also don't buy the "Thief 2 has no atmosphere argument," since Thief 2's atmosphere is exactly what appeals to me. It's just less supernatural than Thief 1. Different, but definitely not lesser IMO.
I also thought Cragscleft was pretty boring, unlike a lot of other Thief fans.
I'm just glad I can enjoy both of them, along with TDS. A lot of people seem to only like the original.

TDP was by far better than T2. I remember being pretty disappointed by the sequel. Actually Thief Gold was the best, lol.

I hold TDP and T2 both in very high esteem. I remember playing the demo version of TDP when it was first released and I probably played that watered-down version of Bafford's Manor about thirty times. They're undoubtedly my most favorite games of all time and while I don't feel one is better than the other, I'm partial to T2 only because Dromed offers more options to play around with. :)

Hey all, I'm a bit new here and this looks like an interesting topic... I'm also pretty new to the Thief series, having just ran through all of them last year in 2012 (and I played tons of great games, but Thief had the biggest impact on me by far). I'm not even big on stealth (few exceptions and stuff like the Riddick games were great), and yeah the Thief games just blew me away.
I've been a huge Deus Ex fanatic ever since it came out and it's still my favorite of all the late 90's / early 2000's FPS's (the best era in my book). I finally hit up System Shock 2 as well a few years ago and that blew my face off too but now that I've gotten around to the Thief games, I seriously wonder if I might like them even more than SS2. SS2 I'd give a nod too with the story, but Thief has Garrett, one of the best characters I've ever seen, and the world/atmosphere was just completely insane. I'm also usually pretty biased with sci-fi, so yeah... I just couldn't believe how magical it was and the neo-gothic elements were more than welcome with me.
Overall I do have to also say I think TDP is my favorite as well. The learning curve for me initially did take awhile, never really played anything quite like these, sometimes have to adapt to older engines. But I just loved TDP's subtlety, like some of the missions where there practically wasn't even any combat at all and it was just exploration, it was still incredible because of the crazy maps and atmosphere. So I definitely liked how the first game was more subtle and mysterious than the sequels, and all the supernatural stuff was really awesome.
I can say Karras is a huge standout for T2 though. While at first he made me histarical with such a crazy voice (even more epic it's Garrett's voice actor), but that ended up just giving him so much character and charm, it was insanely fitting and it was insane how convincing and believable Karras was, character wise. So I'd say he left a pretty big impression on me up there with like the Deus Ex AI's, SHODAN, etc. T2 all around felt way easier than TDP to me though, not that this is a complaint. But yeah, simpler levels, the auto-updating map made navigation much easier, etc. All around though I think it's easy to look at the first two games as one huge game practically, so I love them both and can see myself replaying them a lot ranking up there with some of my all time favorites.
TDD... well, I know Invisible War very well, too well. That engine sure looked great back in the day with awesome lighting and physics, but hot damn it felt like such a chore after awhile. Not as much as Invisible War, and I always heard people say TDD is a better sequel to the Thief series than Invisible War was to Deus Ex, with that I'd agree, but yeah. The HUB idea was whatever to me and super annoying with the tiny maps, the Keepers being heavily involved in the story was not something I ever wanted to see (would have rather they just stayed in the shadows as some mysterious force behind Garrett), and I think the story completely jumped ship with the old lady and from that point on. Won't go into details so I don't potentially spoil things for others, but yeah. It's too bad it wasn't made in the id Tech 4 engine like The Dark Mod or something, that or heck I would've loved TDD in the Dark Engine. Anyone ever think about doing a demake? haha...
I mean overall, the game was a good length, still really fun, same composer which rocked, Garrett was still badass Garrett, but yeah I don't think it stacks up to the first two and I'm not sure if I'd like to revisit it much. On its own it's incredible and while I played and loved Dishonored last year, I'd say TDD was definitely better in my book. The tone was still pretty grim and with all the levels/environments taking place at night or in the dark, they did a good job capturing the vibe of the originals. It just slips up a little to me with the engine and silly plot points.
So that's a lot of randomness, but yeah I can easily say all around the Thief games were some of the best games I've played period. Once I got the mechanics down and all, I thought it was incredible how well the games have aged. It almost feels like a joke to me looking at something like Half-Life next to it. I love Half-Life, but I've overplayed that one and I just see no comparison with it and to the Thief games. Thief is genre defying, innovative, captivating, and just incredibly out there with its stories and setting. Timeless stuff.
Overall my favorite map out of all three games... I'd probably have to go with The Sword from TDP. That level took me to another world.
T2 had excellent maps all around, I hated Shipping & Receiving though (felt like a map better fit for Deus Ex or something, I dunno lol). Soulforge was a little ridiculous too, I actually didn't finish it... probably would've taken me like weeks, lol.
TDD, I'd say The House of Widow Moira stood out a lot (amazing music).
I guess if it's worth noting I played Thief Gold specifically, not the original TDP.

Welcome to TTLG! It's always good to hear of a new convert to Thief. Do you mean TDS by the way?
Not much can beat the Thief story but for gameplay, you might like to have a look at the Fan Missions.
Xeogred on 3/1/2013 at 13:25
Whoops, yeah somehow I wrote Deadly Shadows as TDD there. lol
I do want to look into some fan missions, seems like I'll be kept busy with those like Doom WAD's. I was thinking of starting with the T2X ones.
