Thief 2, to me, encompassed my idea of the gane better - breaking into places and ripping off rich assholes. Garrett even says as much in the basement of the Bank, though I can't remember the exact quote. I can't comment on maps, graphics, and whatnot, basically because I can barely get the damn thing to run, but T2 seemed to me to play better. The machines were a little silly, but as that had to do with the title, what can I say? It made things a little harder, I think, though I'm sure I'm in the minority - my gameplay skills are quite lacking. I'm only halfway done w/ TG - still (I wrote a whiny thread last summer) - and while TG isn't exactly high on my list of games to complete, some of the missions grow on you; Cragscleft, Cathedral. And since I started coming back recently, I'm actually motivated to get at least as far as Return to the Cathedral, to see what the shite-yer-pants feel is all about. I enjoy the feeling of sneaking up on a guard to find out there's three more round the corner more than walking into a cave full of burricks. But those haunts are something else entirely!

All the same arguments you heretics have given in the past! Lay thyself on my anvil, thief! :o The Builder's truth it is, that men without belief [in Thief I] do soften and fail, as rotten wood. :laff: :joke:
Thief II may have superior graphics (textures too) and technical stuff, but that's to be expected, and I think everyone would have been insulted if that weren't the case.. Thief I just has a darker grittier atmosphere, the storyline rocks (Thief II is just about cool levels with no plot), and it's much scarier than II (which was, other than the treebeasts, a walk in the park :bored:).. Nah, I like 'em both, but I'm definitely more of a Thief I fan. Each is entitled to their opinion, but don't give the same arguments next time!

What do you mean by "pottery guards" by the way?
It's a Bluecoat line. Something like.
"Got to get the Sheriff to spring for better uniforms. These things make us look like stupid little pottery figures.
(lowers voice a bit)...never going to impress the ladies...":cheeky:
He's right.

Why does everyone prefer Thief 1 to Thief 2?
Gameplay wise, I like T2. The new items are fun. Storywise, I like Thief 1. While T2 has an interresting story, it tends to play out at a much slower pace. T1 is more suspensfull while telling a rather short and compact story. Beyond that... I play FMs more than the original thief missions.

 I prefer Thief 2 better, for one simple reason, I HATE UNDEAD!
The undead just completley threw me off the game, i didnt mind just a fair sprinkling of them, but as you got further, omg, i could hardly walk 10 paces without hearing that annoying moan! And its not as though you get alot of holywater either, they just comlpetley freaked me out......
And so to my shame i have never completed thief 1, and im still doing thief 2, as i found this game about half a year ago. (so many games, so little time!)
I understand that this game is about stealth, but sometimes they were just to abundant to sneak past.
But anyway thats my opinion.....i think after i complete thief2 i will try and do thief 1 again, BTW is thier a level skip for thef 1? so i don't have to play some of those levels that i hated and can get back to where i left off.
Yours for as long as i can stay awake.

Thief 2's plot was designed around the missions. Thief 1's missions were designed around the plot. this is just my opinion, but TDP felt more like a complete story, while TMA seemed more fragmented and uneven.
TMA had much more streamlined level design, but I didn't feel nearly as immersed in, say, Life of the Party as I did in any given level of TDP. (except Escape, because GAWD I hate those frogbeasts :grr: )
I guess it just comes down to a matter of preference. Story and immersion is a tiny bit more important than gameplay and level design to me, so I prefer Thief 1. (that, and I *really* like Hammerites. ) If you're into huge, complex levels, or you just want to sneak around and have fun, you'd probably like Thief 2 better.

You bunch of taffers... it is not a question of which one is better... they both complement each other - thief 2 is not just thief 1; it takes the game in a different direction, focusing on the people of the city and strange stompy robots. But then, thief 1 will always be the original and nothing will beat that first "stealth fix". And so instead of discussing which one is better, we should see them as a whole and look forward to thief 3.
Saying this, Thief :TDP is better and to say it wasn't would be over looking the fact that thief 2 was a classic shaky edios "lets push this cash cow out the door boys!" job.
edit - when will this illiterate learn to type, and spell?

see, in my book of preferences, Thief II didn't have "The Mage Towers", easily one of my favorite Thief levels.
Then again, "Gold" didn't have "Trail Of Blood", one of my other favorite levels.
I suppose it doesn't really matter? Most of the things I like about T1 over T2 are engine exploits, like Kangaroo Jumping, but big deal.
My personal favorite is T3: The Not-So-Dark-And-Actually-Somewhat-Sparkly Project.

As I said before, I like both T1 and T2.
Some things about the undead: I like the way they were placed in T2 better. In T1, zombies & other undead were found only in the 4 undead missions, so you expected them. In T2, they were placed in normal levels, making them much more frightening because of the surprise. I can still feel the chills when I encountered the couple in necromancer's spire...

in my humble opinion :cheeky:
I like T: DP - haven't experienced the others yet. I'm a graphics freak, though - I play games for the design element. I like to explore and discover in games. T: DP has good graphics for its time, and some of the gameplay elements are definitely different. But, T2 has better potential for architectural structures that look a bit more polished. Also, I love technology, so the Metal Age elements of T2 definitely attract me more than a Medieval flair with zombies and such. Thief as a whole rules, in my mind, over all the rest of the video games I've ever played: which may not be many compared to others, but I've played quite a few.
