Sorry, I didn't realise this discussion had been done many times before, but, wow, what a response!
For me, I guess its all just a case of your point of view.
Where some see Bonehoard and The Haunted Cathedral and the undead in general as excelent scare oppurtunities, I see horribly linear, badly constructed dull levels which dont invoke the feeling of being a Thief at all.
To me, ALL the mansion levels are better in Thief 2. The beautiful atmosphere, the architecutre, Gervasius mansion is just amazing. Constantines mansion (from the sword) on the other hand, was a ridiculous confusing mess, which while initially excelent in its surreal weirdness, quickly lost its novelty and frankly annoyed me. Baffords manor was ugly and strangly orange.
I felt Thief 2 plot was much better, what with the way previous levels (like Framed) only work later on when you realised how you were helping the Pagans without realising it. Karras's eventual plan came as a surprise and was really such a mad plan I couldn't help but be impressed. Thief 1, on the other hand, just had you taking some eye, getting your eye torn out and then following the Trickster and taking it back.
The Burricks - which some people see has interesing beasts - I thought were laughably awful sausage monsters who made me laugh even more than those similar looking Kraken things in Deus Ex.
And the bloke who does Garrets voice doesn't sound quite as good in the first one.
Still, its all a matter of opinion.

Nah. His voice acting is better in T2. It's deeper and well... like most people would put it, it sounds more... "cool". Nononono. Don't get the wrong idea. I am NOT attracted to males... I am not... really... why do you suspect me?! WHY?!?! DAMN YOU ALL! DAMN IT! LEAVE ME ALONE!

I think there is a simple reason why the story in T2 is so crude compared to TDP: In TDP they thought of a good story from the start. In T2, they had to pick up the mysterious clue about the "Metal Age" from the last video in TDP and tried desparately to make something credible out of it, but failed miserably.

Now they're trying to differentiate between the same actor in the same role in the two games to say thief 2 is better *tsk* Time to call the funny farm

How about...
WHICH VIKTORIA LOOKS BETTER? TDP's OR TMA's?
:cheeky:

One question, Child of Karras: why do you have to constantly imply that people who think T1 is better are not capable of logical thoughts? Because they disagree with you?
Child of Karras on 28/3/2003 at 13:34
LUTHIEN=I have no idea what is making you say that. That part about Viktoria is just a joke.
No I'm not saying T:TDP/Undead lovers are idiots. I just don't agree with them... it's my opinion and some of the posters has one like mine too. No problem there right?
[EDIT]Oh yeah, I don't remember saying anything about T:TDP lovers being dumb. You must have mistook someone else's post for mine...

I was saddened to see someone saying that The Metal Age "failed miserably", especially in this forum. Good god, man, Life of the Party was quite possibly the best gaming experience of all time. I have a feeling most players found Thief 2 a better all around game (I know I did), but many are afraid to admit it to the hardcore crowd who is enamored with the cult status of TDP. Everyone has their own opinion, but my only fear is that the developers of T3 will listen to these folks and make the new game filled with tedious burrick tunnels and zombies. :erg:

Originally posted by Francine Rereading my post, I'd agree with you that I was a bit harsh. heh, don't sweat it. Not a big deal, i just thought lines like "While Ambush uses textures well, the same can not be said for Eavesdropping or most of the other Thief 2 OMs" were a bit cheeky.
In more detail: I agree that many recent FM's are just as well built and aesthetically pleasing and atmospheric etc as the OM's, sometimes more so. That said, fm designers are still (with notable exceptions/wildcards such as YcatX) mostly using a similar language and style of architecture and texturing to that developed and used in the OM's. And if we factor in the couple of extra years they've had to develop stuff, it shoudn't really be surprising that the quality has risen, indeed it's just natural progression.
My point was really that we shouldn't forget that the FM designers are really building on top of the achievements and pioneering work done in the OM's.

Geez! Reading this makes me suddenly very sorry for the Thief 3 developers! There's gonna be no pleasing everybody! Universal acclaim, they can forget it now.
Now don't get me wrong, I've always thought it was great that people love Thief for such a mad variety of reasons, many of them quite conflicting; shows the depth and variety of the games, but what on earth is the consensus for the next episode?
From reading this, any inclusion of robots or zombies, gadgets or no gadgets, Mechanists or Hammers, quirky "story-driven" levels or straightforward "architecture" mansion levels will at the same time delight and horrify us in equal measure.
Perhaps every level could have an options panel. You know, select religious freak (Hammer or Mechanist), select monster (Zombie or Robot)...
...and that would never work either! Glad it's not my problem.
I just don't subscribe to the theory that one of the games is better than the other, I tell people I'm a fan of the Thief games, ie both of them.
When I bought Thief, I expected a game where you break into medieval type mansions, steal stuff, and sneak back out. And I wasn't disappointed, even the most basic FMs I've played manage to give me that fix perfectly well.
To find a game series with such an unusual plot and a world of bizarre religion, myth, intrigue and downright dark WONDERFULNESS was a total bonus, and you won't catch me complaining about any of it :)
