Ok, Im'm gonna follow the lead and have my own little rant, in dialogue form. (keep in mind, rants can be totally one sided, and doesn't have to take all facts into consideration)
Scene: The TDPer and the TMAer have just cleared a mansion and are considering their next move.
TDPer - Well, that was fun. I enjoy mansion raiding from time to time, but now I want a different challenge.
TMAer - What? Something different you say? Like... some detective work?
TDPer - Well, that door looks like it's leading down to a crypt. I bet there are zombies guarding some valuables down there!
TMAer - [Groan]
TDPer - I knew it! I can hear one of them already.
TMAer - Err... No, that was me just then. Look, I don't feel like hacking through 10's of undead right now, but you go ahead, I'll just find another mansion. Enjoy yourself.
TDPer - You don't have to kill them you know... You can just run past them if you don't feel like sneaking. They are quite slow, I assure you.
TMAer - Naah, I don't have any specific purpose-built gadgetry handy just now so I guess I'll pass.
TDPer - [sigh]... These modern thieves, they think any thieving besides burglary automatically becomes some sort of tomb raiding hack-fest. It doesn't have to be that way... you know?
TMAer - Yeah? Whatever... see ya later... Laura [chuckle].
I love both games, by the way. As stated previously, We are arguing over the very best of games here. :thumb:

Good point about the light and "graphic novel" effect of software rendering in regard to atmosphere. Also, it seems to lend sort of a more gritty feel to the world, in addition to obscuring repetitions in textures. Hardware rendering can make thing look... well... a bit too clean. I wouldn't go back to software though, the loss of depth and definition are huge drawbacks. :)

It doesn't have to be that way... you know? I don't know about the others but I think Graverobbing is LOW. I prefer my Thieves to be breaking into mansions, framing annoying, loyal officer and travelling via the Thieves Highway. NOT breaking into tombs carrying bottles of Hammer-scantified liquid... As mentioned before, Two or three levels is fine... not 70% of the whole game.

The only "graverobbing" is technically Bonehoard.
Child of Karras on 29/3/2003 at 13:24
and THC and RTC and some others... I forgot what they're called
Anything with undead crawling all over the place is something I would consider Graverobbing. When I say crawling all over the place, I mean literally. Everywhere you turn and there's either a Zombie or Burrick.
sailoreagle on 29/3/2003 at 15:20
Burricks aren't undead.
And hm... so the first part of Cragscleft (the haunted mines) is graverobbing too?
Just because there's undead around, it doesn't mean you're being TombRaider-like.

I don't think that is the case. I disliked the fantasy-critters and I prefer city missions too. Still I think TDP eas the better game because of the immersive storyline. I just can't make myself take robots speaking with the voice of their creator seriously.

How about this, they are both really good games. No point in arguing over two great games. Whether you like TDP or TMA is all based on opinion. I prefer the spookier setting. I like games that make me jump. That is why I like TDP better.

Wow I didn't know there was such a rift between "TMA-ers" and "TDP-ers" either! I didn't think they were *that* different myself. There are actually sometimes when I prefer Thief 2. Both are flawed , but both are great IMO. To put it succinctly I thought that Thief 2 had style and polish whereas Thief 1 had "spirit". But I still slightly prefer Thief 1.
I personally found the zombies silly and would much rather have preferred mutant radioactive Teletubbies on motorbikes.

Just because there's undead around, it doesn't mean you're being TombRaider-like. Burricks aren't undead, yes I know but because they're hard to take down and have great offensive moves, I consider them part of it. As for Cragscleft, getting out of the lower levels was quite a bitch... for me anyway.
TombRaider-like? IMO, any mission with the undead literally crawling all over the place is TombRaider-like. But you can't really say TombRaider-like since from TR1-3, it only had humans, animals and... some mythical creature. TR:The Last Revelation is different though...

^Yeah and what Osterman said. Both are great games. I just prefer Thief II because it's more realistic.
