Were they trying to show that he is always unhappy about being a servant and having to live in the lower end of the manor?

Must be those heavy eyebrows. The turned-down mouth wrinkles help too. I think he's just not a happy camper, and should be blackjacked until he cheers up.

I guess what I am trying to understand is that he is sad because of his social ranking, and has to work long hours for very little. In Baffords' he sleeps in a stone room and owns nothing except for the outfit he is wearing. If Thief was following the idea of indentured servants, then he may have been working for nothing except for room and board.
In my upcoming FM A Servant's Life, the main character will have a life that is far beyond belief (in a negative manner) and along with the 'modifications' and his frown, his expression looks like he really is being treated so poorly.

It's obvious his underwear is climbing up his butt and creating severe discomfort, but being a servant he knows that no one cares so he can't complain that his mom bought him underwear two sizes too small again.
