Why doesn't TLG have a kickstarter to do a spiritual thief successor.. - by Infiltrator84

I think a true spiritual successor to Thief would draw more attention and more $$$ for Kickstarter. TDM has shown in concept that it can be done. Tangiers has shown that people are wiling to fund a stealth game on Kickstarter too. Think of what a group of 5-10 people (hopefully which at least a couple would be LGS alums) who were getting paid and using an existing game engine could accomplish.
Dishonored isn't a good enough spiritual successor? Dark mod? 1000+ fan missions?
What exactly are you looking for - a new story? Modern graphics?

Isn't this illegal, considering that site will let you donate money toward the project? Unless I'm missing something, or Squeenix/Eidos is allowing it, you can't make profit off anything made with Dark Engine.

The company that owns the engine offers not only a free version of the engine, but also a commercial license for $30. It's perfectly legal.

Wait wait wait wait wait. Wait. Uh... Ryan, please tell us you don't honestly believe that Thief was developed in DarkBASIC.

I don't know who that company is, but that's not Dark Engine. Dark Engine belongs to Squeenix/Eidos. So, what you are talking about is not the same engine that Thief used.

Guys, it looks like I was wrong. Dark Engine was developed before The Game Creators was even established as a company, in 1999. In that case, no, the game won't be developed in the Dark Engine and I'll have to explain that on Patreon. I was convinced that this was the Dark Engine.
However, we're still going to work on our original plans, even if this isn't the dark engine. But thanks for pointing that out, you guys saved me from a lot of potential problems.

Well... not to sound unpleasant, but here is another suggestion that will save you from a lot of trouble: don't even start a free game development project without knowing precisely what you are getting into. Unless you have considerable experience (in say, mapping), you have no idea how much work it is. And for heaven's sake, don't get money involved unless you really really really know what you are doing. Which, judging by this elementary mistake, you don't.
Seriously. Don't do this.
Why not get into making a fan mission or two instead?

Well, we know he's never touched DromEd, that's for sure.

We have the bad luck that LGS doesn't exist. So there can not be any KS. Cyan Worlds, for instance, still exists, with the main people behind the company still in charge, still holding to their vision, having done a KS to develop a spiritual successor to Myst and Riven. We have the luck to have TDM, but TDM is not and probably will never be a "real game". It is a compilation of missions and while it's great, I still miss having a whole campaign, based on a far reaching story, with a plot that unfolds with progress, hidden agendas to be uncovered and all the goodness.
