We have the bad luck that LGS doesn't exist. So there can not be any KS. Cyan Worlds, for instance, still exists, with the main people behind the company still in charge, still holding to their vision, having done a KS to develop a spiritual successor to Myst and Riven. We have the luck to have TDM, but TDM is not and probably will never be a "real game". It is a compilation of missions and while it's great, I still miss having a whole campaign, based on a far reaching story, with a plot that unfolds with progress, hidden agendas to be uncovered and all the goodness.

There are at least two large campaigns (7+ missions) in development and one (3 missions) already released. Many of the existing missions are continuing storylines as well.
That aside, I can appreciate the appeal of multi-mission narratives, but I don't know how that makes the difference between being a "real game" or not.

It's a real game, it simply doesn't have a big campaign, but as has been pointed out several mini-campaigns already exist and really that is the essence of what the Dark Mod is about. It allows for a lot of mapper creativity. Grayman's Steele series is fantastic.
