I want a gaming article to give me the facts about a game AND if it's any fun. Because sometimes the parts don't sum up, you know?
The main thing though is that it should be independent and if it's not, it should be clearly marked as PR, or if there could be doubts give it a disclosure by the author.
I can live with a journalist having a different opinion, but when I read into an article and halfway through I notice that he must have been paid for his laudatio, then I feel I've wasted my time.

A game review should delight and entertain without digressing into vacuous crap. Kind of like, the exact opposite of what's happened here.

Eh, DDL, Its mostly about how I say it not what I say.
When you state objectively that you are opposed to the doctrine of pre-emptive war, support whatever economic system will result in an equitable distribution of wealth, and that the rule of law should apply equally to all people regardless of social or economic standing, it all sounds very reasonable.
Should you read that same thing in the form a bile, vitriolic rant like most of my posts are it comes across as batshit crazy.

Good lord does every fucking thread with you have to be about some hegemonic conspiracy to put down the little man? What do you think about game reviews, man? Game reviews!

Already mentioned. Game reviews suck because of a combination of bottom of the bucket hiring (your best journalism students go to work for places like the NYT, not Gameinformer) and a lack of integrity on the part of the companies that publish review. It also doesn't help that a lot of game writers are simply raging fanboys, something that shows when they write their reviews and previews.
I mean....I'm just not sure how its possible to rate either the original Halo or GTA 4 as 100/100 games. Especially when the former includes one of the worst levels in any modern FPS.

Also, when the devs grant you exclusive interviews, invite you to their offices for a nice lunch and to talk to some of the team, give you exclusive preview sessions etc... it's quite possible that you're going to err on the side of awesome when writing them up, lest they be less accommodating in future. This plus dependence on advertising revenue probably contributes to why mainstream gaming journalism (publications mainstream enough to get personal rapport with the devs + large advertising spends) tends to be a bit unreliable.

The goal of a magazine is to sell and so the state of gaming journalism nowadays is simply the result of what people wanted to read.

Haven't read the review, but Eurogamer gave Tribes Ascend 10/10. Just FYI.
