I know I'm smarter than I really am, I think.
Anyway, I was going to throw in not that gamers are "people" but almost exclusively males. White ones at that. Shit, we love our caged rat syndrome so much we just about wrote it in to law.
The girls in the reversed scenario would probably have a friendly sharing of points of view, agree to disagree and then tell their mutual semi friends how the stupid, stuck up bitch thinks she's all that with her PS3 and shift lunch spots without telling her. Leaving her defenseless against the emos, LOL.

:weird:
Also, I disagree with that "exclusively males" comment.

Ostriig, you're probably right about partisans in other areas; I'm simply not as exposed to most of them as I am to gamers.
Hey, same here. I think we all try to keep our distance when we can. Every now and then you can observe from a distance, though. But then, I do sleep with a Ferrari flag hung above my bed and grow restless when someone says "McLaren", so...

HERETIC!!!!!!
Ok, seriously though, it's just how most people are. We're taught from an early age to be competitive with other people over completely inane issues. It's all pointless, but we elevate it to such high levels it's insane. Just look at sports riots; I'm sure many of us just look at these poor idiots and think, "thank god I'm not that bad." It comes from so many sources, it'd be almost impossible to root out completely; religion, parents, school (BIG culprit, imo), the internet, games; you get the idea. Personally, I find it kind of silly and rather pretentious, but then again, I, too, have my prejudices.

As far back as I can remember, gamers have had things to be partisan about: C-64 vs Spectrum, Amiga vs Atari
Back when I shorter and had string tied to the ends of my mittens so I wouldn't lose them, the whole partisan attitude came about for a particular machine just because you had one. There was no way you were getting a different one, and that's how the line was drawn, neh?
But not just computers, I seem to remember being pretty uptight about Transformers like that, too.
These days, because I can afford different consoles, I'm less partisan about hardware just because I have it, and tend to judge more on merits, for example, I have a PSP and the software library is pretty gash, so I'm selling it. I love my 360, but despite this I still want to get a Wii because it's so much better than the 360 with large groups of friends. Maybe it's just something you grow out of, although some people don't.
