Why was Thief 3... - by rob1727

I have to say, I actually disagree with the notion that the games industry is dead. I mean, sure there are a ton of instant-gratification games, as you put it but there's also some innovative and interesting titles that come along every now and then (i.e. Machinarium, Trine, etc. Granted, the games I just mentioned are Indie games, and thus aren't among the same quality as triple A titles, but that doesn't mean they aren't good as such.)
Also, 'the games industry is dead' is a highly subjective statement that shows that it is your opinion of the current state of things, and not necessarily the view of the whole. I would agree that there are some bad things going on right now though, which is a shame. One big issue with the industry right now is DRM. Ugh.:erm: But that's for an entirely different discussion. Anyway, we're going off topic here.
When he said "killed" the gaming industry I believe he meant caused it to take a turn for the worse. I do not think anyone can argue that video games are dead (as in a dying industry). If anything video games are become more and more popular every year. What used to be the hobby of kids and nerds has now become very mainstream. But I do know how he feels. Even with the huge numbers of titles that come out it is so hard to find anything worth playing. That is what I believe he meant by "killed" the industry. I remember the feeling of browsing Amazon.com looking for a new game to play and feeling so disappointed that after looking through hundreds of choices there was not a single game I wanted. There are so many titles and yet it is so hard to find a game worth playing.
This message board is so popular not only because Thief was a great game (which it was) but also because nothing has come by to take its place. Over 10 years after Thief came out there are still almost no purely stealth-based games out there and those that do exist tend to be linear third-person garbage like Splinter Cell. It is really quite sad. The industry releases tons of games that are all about running into every area with no thought and your gun firing away, yet they release virtually nothing that requires stealth and planning.

That's true.... but I interpreted his statement in a way that suggested that the video game industry is dead. Not literally dead(as in everything just stopped) - I meant more in terms of 'there's nothing to play these days.' Anyway, YOU may not find anything to play, but I do. Also, like I said in my last post, there are some interesting titles coming out these days like Machinarium.
I guess I should have worded my post different, because the term "dead" usually implies that it just stopped, but as I said, that's not what I meant, nor do I think that is what theBlackman was suggesting; because, as you just pointed out, the industry is far from dead.

more time studying under Richard Garriott. Your point?
Warren worked briefly as a producer on the original Thief: The Dark Project. He has stated in the past that his own time and contributions were limited. He is also quoted as saying he didn't get Thief.
If anyone made TDS even remotely close to the originals, it was Randy Smith, and he either left or was 'let go' over creative differences. He knew the game needed another month or two extension before it was ready...but it was shoved out the door.

Oh I see. You know what you are talking about. Unfortunately for you, Warren Spector spent very little if any time "in the trenches as it were". lol Captain Spandex... lol what a funny name. This is a good one. :) Oh btw, mr. Spandex, did you also know that garriott actually stuck spector on his ultima rpg series where he primarily acted as "visionary" whilst lord british stole away to romance lgs under the full moon as they all worked feverishly to develop (in-house) this new and groundbreaking tech that was known as Underworld. :ebil: Richard Garriott and Looking Glass Studios both routinely developed unique and groundbreaking tech for their games. Warren Spector has done a few interviews. As he has always been known more for his mouth than his technical abilities (of which he has none). It is laughable to hear you say that Warren Spector studied under Richard Garriott. lol He had Richards blessing to produce his Ultima games for a while because he was himself more interested in what Looking Glass Studios (Blue Sky) was doing with his Underworld series! LMAO!!! Warren Spector worked with Garriott for x amount of years, Looking Glass worked with him for x amount of time less than Spector. Cool. A reason to use italics. Thats the problem with wikipedia, as it only gives you the bones not the flesh.

...are you actually arguing over who Lord British Von Renaissance Festival III cared more about?
I don't care if he locked Warren Spector up in his basement and fed him pickled catfish. The man created Deus Ex.

Which has abso-damn-lutely nothing to do with the discussion at hand. So he did DeusX. Big fucking deal. That's not the issue.
Take it up on the DX boards.

You all take this shit WAY too seriously. Seriously, you guys are still spewing foam all over your neck-beads about Thief Deadly Shadows? Move on. Instead of focusing on mistakes of the past, go talk about hope for the future.
And go play Rose Cottage in the meantime.

"My favourite game designer can beat up your favourite game designer. And your username is
stoopid." Great stuff! You wanna argue that Spector was or wasn't fit to do Thief, sure, that's a good subject, but now all he's done is "a few interviews" 'cause you don't like him? Go buy an Apple and post on MacRumors.

Actually, it fed quite well into the little discussion between Goldmoon and the good Captain, you're barking up the wrong tree there.
theBlackman on 6/11/2009 at 01:11
As a discussion of the input from who and what during the making of the game, perhaps.
As a discussion of why the problems not so much. The actual "control" of the design was sloppy.
As for *paraphrase* "He's a good guy because he did DX" Bullshit. The point is that his contributions to the main theme in this thread is that He made no contribution worth considering.
