To a point. TTLG is extremely vitriolic, to the point where any disagreement with the "accepted" positions results in a mobbing. Unfortunately it's fairly typical of any forum that is dominated by one side or the other of American politics. I've noticed that forums with users who share a broad spectrum of political beliefs, who don't care, or who aren't familiar with American politics are usually much more reasoned and intelligent in terms of their discussions....and that issue spills across into non-political discussions.

I'm not entirely sure why but American politics inspires a vitriolic hatred of anyone who disagrees, and they DO hold grudges.

Perhaps it's because of the racism and white supremacism that is endemic to American culture.

Or perhaps, it's better to not attempt to respond thoughtfully at all and just stick with "put it in the butt"

It's because US politics (from an outside perspective at least) is bizarrely cartoon-like. The whole left vs right thing is ridiculous. As is the idea that they are just two aspects of the same thing. When two viewpoints oppose, one is more often than not going to be more right than the other. A good example is global warming and evolution - either anthropogenic global warming is happening, or it is not - there is not a left-wing reality and a right-wing one. Same with evolution. There are some cases where the established viewpoint is incorrect or objectively flawed and usually, if that's the case, then over time, mounting evidence shows it to be so. The fact that this happens however is not a justification for any opposition to the status quo to be treated like a plucky underdog fighting against suppression by corrupt mainstream ideologues.
