Greetings fellow Taffers.
It is with a heavy heart and troubled brow that I find myself confused, wading through any scrap of new gameplay footage I can find on NuThief. The game is not free form movement anymore. You are only allowed to jump where they let you, rope arrow where they let you, on and on. Every report Ive seen indicates that these areas you are allowed to jump and rope arrow, are nowhere near the amount that they should be. More confusing still, is what they *did* hang onto from the original game. The name Garrett, The City, and Basso.
With an established trilogy of coherent and vibrantly memorable games under its belt, Thief: The Dark Project has an illustrious 16 year+ run, due to the countless rabid fans of the series, and its horde of FMs and ingenious technical advancements. We now have a new game in our midst that was not only "inspired" somehow by Thief, but takes its very name!
All factions and previous characters and story are obliterated, except the names Garrett and Basso. Would there be obvious complications and conflicts by including this storyline into official canon? The timeline is highly suspect, and I believe even the map is different. What is the relationship between this new game and the previous trilogy? What if you play the game once and simply cannot return to the game ever again because of the lack of Hammers, and Pagans, and Keepers?
If you dont come back to this game because you cant live without the free form exploration model presented in The Dark Project, it doesnt mean that anyone else is wrong for continuing to play. It simply means that you played the game, you found the good points, but didnt continue replaying because of the creative gameplay labotomy.
I remember gushing about Deadly Shadow for the first two weeks on the Ion boards. The flaws were not easily apparent at first play. Stephen Russell, Eric Brosius, the Light Gem, all was right with the world... You happily swam out far from shore, through the unseen reefs and shallows, that were there from the start. Come to think of it... Deadly Shadow is firmly within my reach, computer specifications wise right now. I may finally do a Trilogy post mortem run. I was fondly watching some Deadly footage earlier. I know Beleg would be proud.
NuThief... I see people scurrying about the deck in these first fateful days, enjoying that first playthrough to the best of their abilities. Mostly it seems, everyone likes a few particular aspects of the game, all the while harbouring the acknowledgement that free form creative exploration has been uprooted. Often you hear that *something special* is missing. Sooner or later, folks will get bored and start trying to break the game, or merely quit playing and never come back, at least for a long time.
Its the gameplay bugs/exploits I look forward to hearing about. Those are always the most revealing, but always come after people have mastered the game inside and out. Only by disecting every aspect of this game, can we aquire the tools required to define exactly what that *special something* is, that appears to be mysteriously absent in this game.
I really look forward to the afterthoughts, and subsequent playthroughs by the more dedicated among us, to find out if this game is truly worth continuing and expanding the Thief legacy, which has now lasted 16 years and counting. I myself have a minor stable of FMs for Gold cooked up back in the day, and still want to finish some of them.
In the meantime, I shall be keeping track best I can, looking for funny video clips of the new game. I find that by being able to laugh at something, I can grow more fond of it. Hopefully I will find one funny enough to post right here!
Well, cheers Taffers. I still love the Thief series with all my gaming heart, and will until the day I die. Lets see what fun can be had with this new Thief game!

I'm still open to it being a great game - as a game, probably not as a Thief game.
In other and better news, Rocksbourg 4 is coming out this year! :D

What is a Series IV, and why are we reflecting on it?
Goldmoon Dawn on 1/3/2014 at 05:21
Right, the original Thread name was Thief: Reflecting on our series IV. I was hoping that the thread would stay in ThiefGen, as it relates to the classic Thief series and the future of including NuThief within. What, is it too soon?
EDIT - Also, Zylon you forget to note the misspelling of extrapolation in the poll options.

Some days, I don't even consider Thief 3 canon...

If EM ends up making a sequel or sequels, NuThief might eventually develop an alternate canon of its own, but based on everything I've heard about it, it sounds like there are just so many things that are incompatible with the canon of the original trilogy that trying to fit them all together would result in a confusing and inconsistent mess.

Precisely, T4 is only canon in so far as using the Garrets name.

Thats what I was afraid of. I suppose because they only saved the names Garrett and Basso, of all people, there isnt much to directly conflict with canon. The timeline really bothers me. Explaining how all the wonderful characters of The City have vanished and been replaced with new ones, and yet Garrett and Basso remain, and are still roughly the same age, still in the same city, although the map is similar but somewhat rearranged.
Why only keep Basso? Of all the awesome characters in the first two games why keep this one?! Did they think that they should keep the name Basso because, in their limited research of the series, he was the first character you meet in Thief II? Thats kinda silly considering the wealth of actual character and story in the first two games. For some reason, someone on that team thought it would be a good idea to keep the name Basso. Why?! lol
The City is the "same", all characters in the entire game except the names Garett and Basso have been replaced. It almost seems that in order to snap this into canon, it would have to be a dream segment or some crap. lol

This.
Deadly Shadows ruined the keepers for me. Not to mention killed them off as a force in the city. But then again, at least it wrapped up the story.

What do you mean in Thief II? I thought you actually meet Basso in the first Thief, in the 2nd level of it. You have to rescue him, although he's knocked out for some bad-prison-environment reasons.
In Thief II, he's not a "Damsel in distress" but his girlfriend is, that's where Basso does something and talks instead of just being a breathing corpse in a prison cell.

The only thing I hated on TDS (non-gameplay wise) was the ending. Garrett sees the Keepers fall, he just walks around some dark street of the City and suddenly an orphan (I guess she is) girl tries to steal him. Garrett says the same thing Artemus said.
At first, I thought he was actually kidding. Garrett is not a Keeper, he's an ex-Keeper. I guess I was wrong, he's probably the one and only Keeper in this new Thief game.
Garrett, you dissapointed me just like Johnny from GTA4 did.
