They were probably just looking at what characters they could use in the new story and there are not a lot to choose from. Basso is kind of prominent and he's not allied with any of the factions.
The problem with Thief is that it really does not work as a story-centric game. The main character is a cipher, the side characters are one note, and the story is basically a flimsy excuse for all the missions. So when the reboot tried to flesh them out (with horrible clichés), it morphed into something else. It's somewhat like the difference between Tomb Raider and the second reboot of Tomb Raider.

What do you mean in Thief II? I thought you actually meet Basso in the first Thief, in the 2nd level of it. You have to rescue him, although he's knocked out for some bad-prison-environment reasons.
I was making light of the research and development process of this particular game, a game that indeed lasted many years in development. I still remember the jokes about the team smoking bongs for months at a time only to throw it all out. I was suggesting that the team never bothered to open up Dark Project, instead went to videos of the beginning of Thief II (the popular one) to see what the DNA of Thief was... and I had said this also before in other threads a year ago.

Why only keep Basso? Of all the awesome characters in the first two games why keep this one?!
Just out of curiosity, which character(s) from the first games would you have kept?
Goldmoon Dawn on 1/3/2014 at 21:16
Well, Ramirez is one of my favorites for sure, but I would have certainly kept the Hammers, Pagans, and the Keepers. I would not have made a game like this one though, I would have made a prequel or somesuch that was a stripped down free form movement 1st person sneaker featuring Missions only, no "hub".

Ramirez is dead in Terri-Brosius-written T3 already.

doesn't matter what happened in the original trilogy - the new game is a reboot, so they could have done anything, instead they've chose to do.. nothing.

Welcome Beleg to the "will NuThief ever be actual canon" thread. I am so glad you could make it!

Since you were one of the pioneers of Deadly fandom on TTLG, perhaps you could share your opinion on whether this NuGame will ever be recognized as canon by the original fans of the well established Thief games.

When I came to ttlg I was looking for ways to translate TDS FMs into German, several months after finally getting used to TDS and overcoming my aversions. But thanks for showing once again your inability to hide the poor factual knowledge behind your THE BUILDER BURLESQUE where you go all pseudo-Shakespeare on us. Concerning the matter at hand: No, due to it's intentional re-interpreting of former canon parts, Thief 4 should not be counted together with the old sources and I doubt it would want that in the first place.
xxcoy on 1/3/2014 at 23:22
It's definitely not Thief as we've known it. You can wave canon goodbye in T4.
Some names, places and things are the same, more hommage than anything, and that's it.
Anyone trying to find "same old" in the new version will be disappointed.
As we've known that long before and had a lot of discussions about it in every forum of the taffer-community, I didn't expect anything else - and honestly, much less than I got now.
Imho, it's a good stand alone stealth game with a thief main character who happens to be similar to Garrett in some aspects and bear the same name.

I see. You are saying that these guys just decided to look ONLY at Thief II and not at Thief The Dark Project, and so they added Basso because he's the first character of the first map?
I agree that it's very ******* dumb. I suppose it is nice to see Basso back, but doesn't mean I ONLY WANT HIM to show up.
