I see. You are saying that these guys just decided to look ONLY at Thief II and not at Thief The Dark Project, and so they added Basso because he's the first character of the first map?
He's also about the only character in the original games who isn't a Keeper, Hammerite, Mechanist or pagan who appears in more than one mission. Once they decided to ditch all the factions, there really wasn't much left to choose from.

I was making light of the research and development process of this particular game, a game that indeed lasted many years in development. I still remember the jokes about the team smoking bongs for months at a time only to throw it all out. I was suggesting that the team never bothered to open up Dark Project, instead went to videos of the beginning of Thief II (the popular one) to see what the DNA of Thief was... and I had said this also before in other threads a year ago.
They have researched the original games very thoroughly, as far as the lore is concerned. There are references to all kinds of things, including some weird stuff that even I, having played the games a dozen times for over a decade, barely remember (such as the war with Blackbrook). There's a homage to Benny, there's a homage to Robbing the Cradle (with all the creepy sexual undertones that the title implies), there's a homage to Angelwatch, etc.

Yeah, when I originally said "in their limited research on the series" I was harkening back to an ongoing joke that the team was smoking up the years-running development costs in a bong, with little to show for it. So, since they obviously didnt have a clue about what made the first Thief games so classic, they had to do quick research on the game they were directed to cash in on. Someone must have thought that Garrett and Basso were the only things worth dragging into this reboot nonsense. Oh well, apparently its all not enough to justify inducting NuThief into canon. Time will certainly tell this tale, as always. I left the poll open indefinetely.

I agree that it's very ******* dumb. I suppose it is nice to see Basso back, but doesn't mean I ONLY WANT HIM to show up.
I agree! I would have liked an actual Thief game, with Hammers, Pagans, Keepers, all the magic and steampunk goodness!

Are these things in cutscenes, readables, or conversations, or all of the above?? I would love to see video footage of these things, and would hope that some would post these things here. That way, we can better determine the extent of including this new story into canon.

Nothing interesting for me, they're all just references but there's nothing that makes the greatness of the good ol' Thief. Obviously, the factions.
Even TDS put all the factions in, and everyone talks badly about that one too.
...And even TDS had references to it, such as Soulforge, Karras, Karras' failed plan.

None of this is canon. It's a whole new universe with references/homages to old ones.

Yeah... the problem with TDS was that it treated the factions like GTA would treat factions (think GTA 2). They were more like organizations with a hivemind than real people.

NuThief will start its own NuCanon of course. I hope that it'll lead to some more interesting things and doesn't just end here. :)

Really? Last I remember, the Pagans were controlled by Dyan the Sorceress and Lockspur. I actually never played GTA2 so I don't really get what you mean about that.
Anyway, talking about TDS...You know what would be interesting? If the NuThief actually had the Kurshok again.
That would be great! Kurshok are my new favourite faction, I always loved Lovecraft-influenced works.

In TDS, you could gather respect for each of the <s>gangs</s> factions by doing stuff for them, so if you shot enough moss arrows in corner stones or killed enough rust mites, the members of the respective factions would start helping you out. For example, a hammerite (a member of a fanatical order that hates thieves with religious fervor) would kill a city guard that was attacking you (a thief), because you were "allied" with the hammers.

I hope it ends right where it is now.

In the meantime, I shall be keeping track best I can, looking for funny video clips of the new game. I find that by being able to laugh at something, I can grow more fond of it. Hopefully I will find one funny enough to post right here!
There really havent been that many funny videos, mostly sad or pathetic. Now that the game has begun to sink in, I find that this video is still the one that captures the game best...
