Without getting involved in a gloves/rope debate, there's nothing terribly realistic about climbing any cobble stones with some rubber gloves spraypainted in silver either.
It comes down to haveing to explain it with magic, and that the rope arrow is more fun and requires more care and planning to use. With gloves its very video gamey - "Oops, here comes a guard! *spiderman* ah, instantly safe."

Finally some people asking a question I was always afraid to ask- Why does everybody hate Thief 3?
I want to get some things straight first.
I bought, played and finished Thief 1 and 2 when they were first released and thought they were the best games ever (although was a bit disappointed by Thief 2's ending-what the hell was that about?). Oh and I played all 3 games on the PC.
When LGS closed I freaked believing that this was the end of Thief,
however when Warren Spector announced he would develop Thief 3 I was delighted if not a little worried that a different developer might get the whole Thief feel wrong.
But I was really impressed with the way they made it and thought they kept as much of the original aspects that they could (voices, characters, sounds etc.) I think they returned Thief to a more middle-age era instead of the out of place Victorian style Thief 2 incorporated. The game looked amazing, had a decent enough plot and a clever ending.
I admit the game had faults but don't they all? I think people should stop whining about 'sellin out' to kiddies XBox, so what. People have to remember that Thief 1 was made in 1999, so of course Thief 3 was going to look and feel and play differently. Its not Thief 1, get over it.
I apologise for the long post but just had to get that off my chest.

No, no they (games) don't all have faults. And those that do don't do them quite as badly as Thief 3 does. There is a world of difference between some constant minor graphical glitch and completely knackering the best FPS movement system (proper leans, mantling) by having a 3rd person body that is clunky as hell.

I played in first person mode all the time without much trouble, it was much better done in the originals though. I didn't like the blackjacking either or the crappy briefings, the black+white ones were much better.
But I can see past these faults and still enjoy the game, like when you love someone you ignore their faults!

WTF, are you blind? People have been listing their reasons for hating TDS in great detail pretty much continuously between now and when the demo was first released.

Ya but I've never really seen a proper debate for it. If you just glance through the forums like I do you see a lot of resentment towards Thief 3 and not many plausable reasons. Anyway I'm more of a Fan Mission/Editors Guild forum visitor.

Not many plausable reasons? Dig deeper into the forums, there are many good reasons for people to have been upset with Thief 3.

It was... subtle. Not your usual "explosive video game finish!"
The end was catastrophic, but it wasn't portrayed in a catastrophic way. More like a "ninja assasination scene" way. It has its own appeal.
Snake there are lots of good reasons to not like T3, but I'm like you - I still was able to enjoy it in spite of its faults.
