T3 was received with mixed responses from the community. It did a lot of things differently, mostly worse. But it's still a great game overall, as you said.
If you want to look into the future of Thief as a video game, you need look no further than (

Oh and you should check out Thievery UT if you don't already know about it.

Because, for starters, It wasn't made by the same people. It seems to me that little care was taken with consistency or aesthentism. Which degraded the game completely. The original team were very smart at what they did, despite having deadlines. (Thief was made around 1999 when there wasn't as much out like this and not much better). Because the company goes bankrupt do you think someone else could pick it back up again and make an equall or better game because of newer technology? Not in my opinion. They didn't have a clue. That's why we see things like wall climbing gloves (haha), A boss type thing at the end (again laughable), A story that makes little sense, a dagger! (Garrett is no assassin, the sword was purely for self defense incase of a fight, imagine defending yourself with only a dagger against a guy that has a sword :nono:) And a bad graphics engine... etc. BTW we aren't just talking about Thief here, Deus Ex had a bad sequel as well called "Invisible War". The title is cliche. "Deadly Shadows"? Sounds like it took alot of thought.
I didn't like T3 because new graphics and a few other little features isn't going to make it good. As well as not being the ones to originally create Thief. Although i'm sure if I never played Thief 1 & 2 I would of liked DS alot more.
This is merely my opinion though. But imagine what LGS could of done with Thief 3 in contrast to Deadly Shadows If they had the time and money. The new engine LGS would of made would be incredible instead of an awkward one. :weird: -->

Hm the boss type thing at the end was no different than the boss type thing at the end of Thief 1. You don't enter a battle of circle strafing and fire arrow shooting, you outwit the boss thing by sneaking past and triggering things that will ensure its destruction.
And I have to disagree with your black and white attitude to classic thief vs tds. I love classic thief more than tds, but I still like TDS for what it is, and I think it's a good game overall. I enjoyed it, even while hating its flaws.

I've rethought some of what I said. I didn't mean to be so emphasizing. Althought DS has a few positive aspects in comparison to classic I don't feel it was right to make 3 due to LGS not having the chance themselves. Even if they sold it to me:laff: I would of said no. I just feel that no one could do it better or have the right to.
I can see how Thief 2's ending seems like a boss since it's Karrass's lair your in and you get to see karrass. But what you fight is not karrass and no different than the other missions. And what you stop is not a creature like boss but karrass's plan. Although the Dark Projects ending is a little more like DS's in gameplay.

AHEM, I said Thief ONE. Have you played it? :erg:
Splashcups on 19/4/2006 at 14:04
The Dark Project is Thief one. Yes I've played it.
Edit: Whoops, Sorry for my total confusion, your right... you did say Thief 1. It's quite late here. Sorry.
Yes, so you'd have to agree that constantine is pretty much just like the hag - stomping around ominously, impossible to kill in direct combat, but you sneak past and solve some puzzels and see the ending sequence.
Splashcups on 19/4/2006 at 14:33
Yes your very much right. And in a situation like that direct combat is not an option. But I have never liked the idea of having to eliminate the target like in Thief 1/DS. Where as in Thief 2 you have only stop the target's plans. I have always enjoyed thief 2 more. Not that there's anything wrong with 1 it's just that it's not fully developed at that point. But a great job for a no.1. All are excellent missions too.
I'm playing through TDP at the moment.;)

I played quite a bit of T2, and some of T1, and I still liked T3. The climbing gloves in my opinion are more realistic than rope arrows...I mean, shooting an arrow into some wood isnt going to support the weight of an adult male for more than 5 seconds. The change from the sword to the dagger was more realistic imho, a thief isnt going to carry around a clunky short sword. It would smack into all kinds of stuff while hes climbing in through a window or whatnot. A thief isnt supposed to go head to head with a big dumb armor clad guard anyway. I always thought of Garrett as primarily a Thief, but secondarily an assassinish type, the dagger works great for that role. Also, some people didnt like the technology in the game? What the hell is that about? T2 had machines that walked around, and remote eyes you could throw...how does that work?
I thought the engine looked good. Besides tripping up on a body or two, I thought the engine worked well.
I enjoyed the city setting and the NPCs/shops you could steal from too. Dare I say it...I liked TDS
Of course I liked T1 and T2 quite a bit as well...they're the reason I got excited when I saw T3 on the shelves.

In Thief 2 you end up eliminating Karras, it's just that the rust gas gets him during the cutscene.
