I've never believed that old argument that mainstream can't be good. And the TDS argument that they broke the game to make it more popular is crap, because the majority of people, Thief fans or non-Thief fans, HATE that game.

THANK YOU! Finally, a
rational person.

Expect its not true. The majority of people like it but accept that its not as good as it could have been.

You fail logic.
Perhaps the people with numbers in their usernames should just stay out of this discussion.

because the majority of people, Thief fans or non-Thief fans, HATE that game. I don't know where anyone said flat out "mainstream games can't be good" on this forum, but I can see how you would think that. In fact, this is a probably a rather valid arguement. Though, personally I don't think that. However, the bolded statement is, sorry, just wrong. If you ask a bunch of gamers that DON'T reside within TTLG, you will probably find that a lot of people actually LOVED thief 3. Just look at gamespot.com. Lots of people gave it a rating above 7.

@ZylonBane- How arbitrary of you. :tsktsk: :cheeky:
I think HATE is an over-strong word for it, it's really more like "dislike" or "are disappointed by" it. DS was a let down but I'd hardly say I hate it (I reserve such a ranking for games with Halo in their title :ebil:).
Taffer36 on 17/5/2009 at 20:04
Really? I was going to say that perhaps the fact that I included people here at TTLG was wrong, but I figured that a majority of other people "disliked" TDS.
My profile on other forums or for online games is Taffer. When the conversation makes its way to Thief, people immediately think I'm talking about TDS and they always say, "What? That game was shit!" Yeah, it's just pure heresay, but it's definitely the only response I seemed to get. How much did TDS make?
The reasons I hate TDS are less that things were made "more mainstream", and more that it was just poorly designed on just about every front. Are you saying they made the physics of bodies shit because the casual audience likes that? Does the casual audience like loading zones all over the place? Do casual gamers enjoy a movement system that just all-around feels cumbersome and terrible?
@ jtr7: I'm not quite sure why you pm'ed me instead of just posting in this thread, but I guess I'll respond here.
My point is that I disagree 100% that mainstream is mostly crap. It's just plain wrong. Halo is a great game. Guitar Hero is a great game. Call of Duty is a great game. Grand Theft Auto is a great game. Dead Space is a great game. Gears of War is a great game. Half-life 2 is a great game. Sure, there is that section of mainstream that tends to be crap (i.e. Wii games or movie-licensed games) but really, all of those truly triple A games are usually fantastic. Not that you can't hate a mainstream game, but they're still well-made games and arguments against them tend to go in circles.

Wow. If you're going to quote good mainstream games I strongly disagree with your selections. Although I think your argument is valid, because there do in fact exist good mainstream games. Counter-Strike and Morrowind will be my examples.

See, there's my point.
Let's take Morrowind. I HATE HATE HATE Morrowind with a passion. It's not even that I'm against RPG's because I thought Fallout 3 and Oblivion were good games. But, even though I hate Morrowind, I can accept that it is a well-made game and I can very clearly see where the draw of it is.
