Hm... I voted "No" out of my first gut reaction.
However, that's not really true. I'd buy it -no matter who the protagonist is-, if:
* the gameplay follows the Thief way of stealth, not the fake stealth way of other games (aka: you only use stealth to get the huge backstab bonusses and to kill stuff)
* my computer can run it without the need for upgrades.
* I'm not too preoccupied with other things or other games at the time of the release.
* It is set in the City, and the City is recognizable (not too much into the future of the City, eh.)
* the guards still do their funny little moves (fistshake and footstomp) when they are enraged because they see me but can't reach me. And they better be saying some funny lines then too.
* the main objective is still: "steal some stuff", not and never "sneak into some place and assassinate someone".
That being said, I think that the plot and gameplay can be screwed up extremely badly, both with a Garrett and a non-Garrett protagonist. And I'm quite wary of that, so I'll wait for demos, reviews and forum reactions before I'll even think of getting it.

Sure I would. I'm still not certain if I even want Garrett in it. Don't get me wrong, I love Garrett, but I'm considerably sceptical regarding how much they'll screw him up (or at least the game around him) and I'd rather avoid that.

Sure I would.
Does that mean you will by it for the label, regardless of content, or that you buy games indiscriminately?:sly:

Pretty much. Never underestimate the stupidity of a fanboy.
The first time around. Because if this one sucks, holy crap will EIDOS never see my money again!

If it wasn't for the exclamation mark, I would've thought you were asking the so-far unheard of forum member, Holy Crap, if Eidos would never see your money again... :erg:
I was gonna say No, but really? I never thought it was Garrett that made thief what it was. Hell, the Anti-hero could've been voiced by Gilbert Gottfried and I'd still play thief...

No, Thief without Garrett is like Terminator without Ahnuld = sucks ass. :tsktsk:
But I think I would buy it anyways just out of curiosity.

I'd like to see some elaborations on where Garrets story can go from TDS from people who are saying there are plenty of directions. I would have happily seen the story end there. You cant draw out an epic god/chosen ones characther because it wont only be a rubbish story, it will rob the prior parts of the story (First 3 thief's)
Thats why I'd be happy with T4 being a large map pack with new tools, graphics and lots of other ideas.
For T4 to work with Garret, he has to fill a role other than that of the player, or the story has to be advanced in someway without taking away from the previous games, which i just cant see happening.
That said, Thief is garret to me, his charachter is what makes the game, without him, it isnt thief, and I agree it should not be called Thief.

It's been elaborated on. Quite a lot. Unless you weren't really saying you wanted elaboration? First off, it wouldn't drag out the trilogy, because Garrett finally got his wish--he thinks. It will have to go in a new direction, and yes, the trilogy concludes many early themes. So then...you've decided afterall that you DON'T want the major elements of the trilogy continued? No more Glyphs, his job as One True Keeper is COMPLETE, The City is balanced but has no City-wide underground secret organization with centuries of prophecy or magical methods of concealment to keep it that way. There are other minor factions with corruption and splintering yet untapped. These concepts alone can be mined a hundred different ways an unimaginative person can never be expected to conceive, but a person who makes a living writing can--they just need to stay away from pop-formula and keep it an exotic and rich amalgam of leitmotif distilled from several genres.
