Yeah the only x64-based compatibility issues I know of are 1] unavailable drivers for old hardware (only my scanner actually) 2] no NTVDM for 16-bit DOS/Windows apps.
BTW, XP x64 is actually rather fully functional. The drivers are there for it as much as they are for Vista/7 64. In the beginning it was tough to get drivers because of how niche the OS is, but not anymore really. You can get all of the updates you'd get with XP 32 too (IE8, WMP11, etc). Works great for games, but again no 8/16-bit software support. XP x64 is actually more a desktop variant of Server 2003 x64 than it is an XP OS although it's tough to tell on the surface.
There's really no reason to avoid x64. There are reasons to avoid x86 though.

I'll break down the basics for you right now.

Cheers! So, yeah, the Pro would likely be the choice for me, given the XP VM for project purposes, at least as far as Uni requirements go. But, as you pointed out, 20 extra George Washingtons, or as it would likely translate in the land of higher prices, 20 Queen's Money, is not that big a deal and probably worth it. I'll look into the trial version, thanks for that!

Thanks to M$FT's (
http://www.microsoft.com/business/thenewefficiency/SanFrancisco/default.aspx) The New Efficiency PR tour I'll have a free copy of Win7Pro waiting for me to pick up three weeks from now. My new system has more than enough horsepower to run all the bling that Eva hates (8gb RAM, AMD 940BE quad-core) so I just leave it on. Besides, I like the way it looks.
What's this about needing XP to run Thief 2 with fog? I finally downloaded Shadows of the Metal age a couple weeks ago so this has me concerned.

For what reason would you ever need 8GB RAM? Unless you're doing a lot of graphics work or video encoding, it's certainly never going to be of much use in a gaming machine.

They've got it going on Radeon HD4xxx series, but it's still broken on Nvidia hardware.

To make a 4-5GB RAM drive and install *game of choice with slow loading times* on it? :sly:

Reading a book during that time is cheaper and a more beneficial use of your time. Book, instruction manual... it does not matter.
Also, I thought Bionic Commando wasn't a very good game.

Thanks for the link. I now know enough about windows 7 to know that it's exactly everything I wished Vista was. Preorder page, here I come!
I had Vista for a while, but then found myself reverting back to XP. Vista didn't have enough fixes to make up for all of the things they made worse. Mac OS is just retarded. I'm so sick of my friends getting macs and then asking me how to fix things or make them work on their brand new mac. WHY would you do that to yourself, you're a student!
I just hope Windows 7 is as compatable with XP software as Vista is.
