I just wouldn't buy a Thief game without Garrett...he's too good a character to lose, or *ugh* modernise. I still think a lot can be mined from him. The only things that would really matter to me in a Thief 4 would be a good storyline, some interesting characters, and those little atmospheric touches that showed the LGS games to be a labour of love.
It would be good if the story was a prequel to events in the Metal Age, or TDP. That way, we could retain Garrett, and the Keepers, and need never refer to anything in Deadly Shadows.
Agree with MMC about the balance of undead/other characters, and what's been said about doing proper city sections. Water and rope arrows should definitely return. Would also like to see:
1. More puzzles based on personal moral choices; e.g. Widow Moira's inheritance. (DS hit the nail on the head with that one, to its credit. I think there's precedent in the previous games*, but examples are few and far between.)
2. More traps and Bonehoard-esque stuff. I'm a sucker for the tomb-raiding thing/undead-levels in general.
3. Frogbeast eggs, baby, Frogbeast eggs.
4. Spiders, baby, spiders! (/AustinPowers)
5. The Builders children should be around in some form. It seems logical that someone would have carried-on/expanded-upon Karras' innovations. Without the mad scheme to destroy organic life, of course. :)
6. Stackable crates. Ah, the joy of staircasing...lose the gloves, G.
7. Pagans, Hammerites, City Watch, other criminals and nobles are all good. But I'd like to see some of the more "fantastic" creatures disappear. The better parts of TDP didn't need people wandering around with wands hanging off their belts. Or Kurshock. I just can't get into the more obvious D&D stuff.
*
e.g. Burying Truart's body, or the way you can choose to kill Mosely after she's delivered the note in Trace the Courier.
i wouldn't want to see garrett in thief 4, not as the player character anyway. his job is done.
I thoroughly disagree!! Whenever I've played FMs where the main character wasn't Garrett I've noticed that somehow it just didn't
feel like Thief. T2X was like that for me as well (plus I absolutely
HATED that damn hammer she carried!).
Imho; Garrett's work will never be done. Probably because he lives well beyond his means and always needs more loot. He also makes the best reluctant hero of any game I've ever played.
Though I think it might work if Garrett played that little girl's mentor and had to rescue her and stuff like that. As long as he had an active part I'd be content.

Hmmm...
Even though I would probably buy and play Thief 4 if it was ever done, which I very much doubt, I think it's time to let Garrett rest in peace. TDP and TMA were great games and a Thief 4 might just spoil that greatness.
With that said, if a Thief 4 was ever made, my opinion is this:
* If it was done as a sequel, I would prefer a change of main character and the girl at the end of TDS would be the obvious choice. But what would the story be about with the circle being complete and all? What I would be interested in is what society will be like without string-pulling Keepers? What will happen with all the information that they have gathered over the years? Could all that information become a threat somehow? Garrett should probably have some role in all this (being the last true Keeper and all), but only as a side character. The risk is that the girl just becomes a new Garrett, so for a sequel to really work, we need something completely different, but I'm not sure exactly what. What if Garrett was killed (or "killed") and the girl has to investigate (and avenge?) the murder (or whatever it turns out to be) and she is drawn into a bigger plot that she quite didn't expect. I think this could make for an interesting story.
* If it was done as a prequel, Garrett could be kept as the main character. There is a lot in Garrett's life that hasn't been explored yet. I wouldn't want to spoil the mystery about who Garrett really is, though (or the Keepers either for that matter), but, as already mentioned, there are periods in his life that could be explored more without spoiling the mystery.
Even if we wouldn't see Garrett as the main character in the Thief 4 that will never be made, he would live on forever in the FMs and FCs and later in our collective memory. A Thief 4 could be fun, but do we really need it? Do we not kind of already have a Thief 4 (even though in a very spread out state)?
And then we have TDM... From what I've seen of it, it might just be a most worthy successor.
A final wish: Write the story before you start to build and adapt the architecture to the story and not the other way around.

All 3 thief games are great as they are. But several things I'd like to see:
- more roofs and attics! I personally love roaming on roofs and sneaking into (sometimes) open windows. There were few such missions in T2 and T3, but too few for me :)
- "horizontal" rope. Shoot a rope arrow at an opposite wall and tie rope at your side and you can get a "bridge"
- weather change may be too. You know like full moon, hard rain, fog or even snow. Would be fun to track guards by their footprints on fresh snow :)

I wouldn't. I was just making a ridiculous request. :p I mean, sure, it could be good, but the Thief rope arrows were excellent because they were predictable. Flailing everywhere as soon as you land on the rope can only spell disaster.
Rune had ropes where you could swing on and this was really good. No need to flail around. :)

Which means, you also don't play FMs where the main character (you) is not named Garrett? LOL! I always find this quite ridicoulous. I play the game because I like the game, not the name of the main character.

Which is a bug in the physics of Thief and you probably wont find such a feature in any newer Thief with realistic physics.

Actually I proposed this as a feature for TDM, but it most certainly will not be in the first release. We will see. I think that would be a very good feature to have, as well as swinging ropes and a grappling hook.

"Wouldn't

It's a wishlist, you muppet; anything goes. Stackables needn't be a bug.

My wishlist has only one item:
1) No more Thief 4 threads.

Not really. I don't play games that I don't like, and it doesn't matter wether they cost anything or not. So if my criterion for getting a game is that it must feature the name Garrett somehow it means that it would also include games that you don't have to buy.

Nevertheless stackables as in Thief 1/2 are not very likely because most engines, nowadays, use more or less, realistic physics engines. And with these you don't get such effects, unless either the physics is borken, or you spefically code them to behave in most cases physically, but not when stacked.

Here's the thing about rope arrows... can you make it so that when you try to jump onto the rope arrow, you instantly get flung across the map and die when you hit the ground?
I sure would enjoy that.
