I may be old fashioned, but my opinion on this is: If you don't like statistics based combat, don't play an RPG.
Well, I certainly wouldn't mind to have an RPG with challenging combat where player skills and statistics go together. Especially in The Witcher's case where you have only a few close combat weapons. Oblivion and other sandbox games are a different matter as you can use bows, magic etc.

Good point. i too missed some tactical depth in The Witcher. All you had was potions and 3 fighting styles.
But the necessary player skill should still be tactics, like choosing the correct weapon, using the right potions, getting into a good position and attacking the right opponent. I don't like it when combat gets too hectic (partly because I'm not exactly good when it comes to aiming fast :cheeky: )

My problem with The Witcher's current combat is that you can't really choose when to dodge or parry properly. There are evasive controls yes, but they aren't precise enough.

You didn't really have to aim that much in BoD as you could lock to enemy. Fighting multiple enemies in that game was all about knowing your surroundings, timing the right combos and using parrying and dodging at the right moment.

you can choose and I thought it's pretty spot on and responsive. like the icon-minigame all you have to watch is the character's animation, after it ends any evasive move can be used and then followed by an e.g. attack move.
tactical depth CAME from potions and movement / stance.
I can tell you of a few fights I had to drink a few potions inbetween to get over them. after I changed my potion "loadout" and chained different sword/sign combos it only took me a quarter of the time.
it only appears to be the same in the beginning but once you got 4 signs and a few higher levels of them and/or sword unlocked it gets much better.
in my opinion they could have made it even more complicated in movement and introduce counters/defensive stances as well.
and don't forget all of this is being limited by the old engine, I imagine a more athletic and agile Gerald in sequels.
btw, console version with more animations and some bonuses has been announced.

for me, it was basically Aard for the first half of the game, and Igni as soon as knockdown became a rarity (basically with everything that was larger than a drowner). The only potions I had to use were Swallow and Tawny Oil, and sometimes Thunderbolt (not counting Wives Tears, for obvious reasons :p )
Not exactly what I would call depth - but it was fun nontheless, and The Witcher is now one of my favourite games.

Considering I've found myself loving the game so much in the past, I'm surprised it took me this long to come around to playing the Enhanced Edition. The thing is patching itself up as we speak.
Which brings me to the next portion of my post. I've heard alot about how long the thing takes to patch up, and watching the thing shoot up to almost 90% in two seconds (FAST COMPUTER GO SATAII POWER ENGAGE) made me think you were all a bunch of whiny bitchy people buying your jankity ass computers with food stamps and twinky bars.
Then...

I've waited two days now.

2 days to patch? Something's broken, brah.

I was exaggerating a bit. :P
The thing actually took a little over an hour to finish up. Now that I've played it a bit, up to the point just past the Frightener and the lab, I'm finding that, yeah, the dialogue is a bit more verbose, but the voice acting seems a little flatter than what I remembered.
I'm thinking about grabbing the Polish voice patch and playing it with subtitles. See what that's like.

you are aware that the second video is about riddick, right?
