Doom 3 source code to be open sourced by the end of the year (

Colour me smug. I guess all the naysayers and bawaawwwwawaawwwwwwwers can pull their collective feet out of their mouths, and stop complaining about the Zenimax takeover.
I look forward to an updated Dark mod with a standalone executable.
Despite his nasally-ness, I'm liking Carmack more and more.

Coolbeans. I started playing TDM yesterday actually, the Tears of St Lucia FM is fantastic. If the rest of the FMs I've downloaded are even nearly as good then I'm gonna enjoy TDM very much. :)

Hmmm? I don't remember hearing anyone having a cry over this. But then again I tend to tune out the opinions of mouth breathing, reactionary, alarmist Angry Internet Men who're elitist, rose-tinted glasses wearing, alarmist, mouth breathers who seem only capable of thinking at extreme ends of the spectrum (eg being unable to compromise); possessing an imaginary sense of entitlement and often being disconnected with reality in general (eg being unable to recognise the fact that the market is very different now).
I never had any doubt that Zenimax would let Carmack release the Doom 3 source. After all they let Id release the Doom Classic (for iOS) source code and ditto for sister studio Arkane with Arx Fatalis fairly recently.

This has been Carmack's schtick forever, and everybody knows it, so I'm not surprised he got it done either. There's one interview where he talks about being recognized by some group for being the most (or one of the most) prolific author of open source software and being really proud of that. It really is a great accomplishment, and blasts the theory that open sourcing software isn't viable, considering he and id have done very well financially for a while now.

It is good news. I figured it was only a matter of time before the Doom 3 stuff will be open because they already released Wolfenstein code a wile ago.
The idea that other developers should see this as a challenge makes me laugh though. Most game developers only care up until they have your money, at which point all support and bug fixes stop. This is why I have to run games restricted to one core, and I constantly get stuck in geometry in some games amongst other problems.
