Do you think most developers actually want to make it difficult for people to play the game they sweated blood on?
Yes
That's fucking stupid.

"That's fucking stupid. "
Not particularly. How are they going to sell you a new game if you can keep on enjoying your favorite old games forever? How would they sell you something new if you could fix all the short-comings and create infinite missions in the old version to turn it into exactly what you want?
Users having choice and freedom is bad for business. That is why you see almost no level editors with games these days, almost no one releases source code, and everyone is tied to an online system that allows devs/publishers to take your game away when they want you to buy something new.

The first two points in your last sentence, while cynical, I can agree with somewhat. I'm not sure I've ever seen any dev or publisher 'take your game away' except in the sense of closing down multiplayer servers for older games, which of course won't leave your single-player game away. Or are you talking about authentication servers? Have the ID servers for any single-player game been shut down as yet?

I don't think id would do something like that. They seem to have more respect for their fans than most. That said, I can see some other publisher saying "we have to shut off our activation servers because the game isn't profitable anymore, sorry". This has already happened with online music services and it is only a matter of time before the same thing happens to games.
