I completed the "Brotherhood Betrayed" side quest last night. Everybody's going on and on about this fabulous enchanted whatsit and how powerful it is and blah-blah-blah. So afterward I get to keep the whatsit, and it turns out to be not even as good as something that I can enchant for myself at the University. After all that buildup I feel cheated.

Hmm, I did Brotherhood Betrayed but can't remember the reward.
I remember being dissappointed that after doing the painted world quest all I got was a lousy apron.

I've got that beat. If you avenge the death of Aevon Loche (spelling?) in Bravil, his wife gives you a book. Big Woop!

Did you try reading it. Most book rewards actually give stat increases, so it isnt that bad.

Just so people know, the reward for "A Brotherhood Betrayed" is the Phylactery of Litheness, an amulet with Fortify Speed of between 5 and 10 (levelled). So yeah, a pretty poor reward to say what you go through in order to complete the quest.
This seems to happen in quite a few quests, but the disappointment of a poor reward is usually compensated for by the loot gained on the quest itself. Like in "Caught In The Hunt", the quest JiP was referring to, the Orc who's running the people hunt drops some decent enchanted light armour which makes up for the rubbish book you receive as the 'proper' reward - which, IIRC, only increases Speechcraft :erg:. The 'hunters' themselves drop some decent loot too.

i think that bread gave you special thieving abilities (night eye, detect life) for a 120 sec. so it wasn't so bad at all
for me it would been one of the earlier thief missions, some are a pain in the ass and the reward is weak
