I know that the NewDark patch makes Thief able to run on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 for desktops and laptops, but could Thief run on a Windows 8.1 tablet?

You'd need a Surface Pro, which is basically an x86 laptop pretending to be a tablet.

Or the Dell Venue Pro, or the HP Omni 10, or the Lenovo Thinkpad Tab, or...yeah, any x86 tablet will work. They're all basically laptops without a keyboard. Just make sure it's running Windows 8, not Windows RT, and has an Intel chip in it, and you're good to go.
The Surface Pro 3 would be the tablet I'd recommend the most, though. Considering the size, the aspect ratio, and the stylus, it's the only machine of the bunch that has some justification for stuffing Windows onto a touch based device.

Probably ,but the controls would be horrible.

Thief runs great on my Surface Pro 1 - you certainly don't need the power of a Surface Pro 3 to run it (but it's nice to have, no doubt). Controls are of course an issue - you can use the Surface Pro's keyboard and an external mouse, or you can use (
https://gameplay.gestureworks.com/) this, which I've had some success with (but of course it will never work as well as a real mouse/kb setup).
(Renz, did you ever end up getting a Surface Pro 1/2/3?)

Nope. I weighed my options, and decided to get another desktop.
I'm still planning on getting one, but I want to wait for Broadwell/Skylake for the better integrated GPU performance. I don't desperate need it, so I can wait another year. Plus, I figure if I'm gonna drop $1200+ on something, I want to make sure it's a little more future proofed.

Good Choice!
