Grand Theft Auto 4.
The only thing that put me off about the story was the ending. The game really felt like it was leading up to a big climax, but IMO it lost focus in the last fifth or so, before abruptly returning to the main story for the last one or two missions (and the story for those two were rather meh anyways). It's unfortunate because the rest of the game was absolutely beautifully written.

Do you remember the "Well we're not here to sell cookies!" line from the first game? Well the successor to that line in the second game is "MORE LIKE TEN SHITLOADS!"
