Warren Spector has said in NYC gathering that there won't be a SDK for DX:IW ever due to the small mod community of DX. DrLoomis at Ionstorm forums confirms this; these tools are said to be unstable, it would supposedly require lot of work to make them worthwhile of release. Disappointing huh?
Makes you wonder what consequences this has for T3 SDK,
doesn't it.

Meh.
We were told the same thing about Dromed.

Ah, but the question is, Sir GBM: will Warren Spector's team be able to pull a Tim Stellmach and prepare the editor for release? Besides, Eidos's silence does not imply they are unaware of what I've done. They will not risk the same mistake.

Yes I know that technically they'll be very similar SDKs but perhaps not identical, plus with Thief coming out later they have longer to stabilise the editor. I wouldn't be surprised if a Thief SDK was released and then some clever fans managed to make it work with DX:IW.

Who says the editor(s) must be released with the game(s)?
Just release them online once they are done. It would be a big mistake not to release a SDK for Thief 3, and I'm sure there's a lot more interest in developing mods for Deus Ex 2 than there was/is for DX1.
With no SDKs both upcoming games will collect dust a lot sooner... :tsktsk:  :(

Thief has a huge number of mods. The communities are only slightly different in size.
I think that it's all because to build a Thief level requires clout, but to build a Deus Ex level requires determination.

It may be that an editor for Thief is postive from a marketting perspective, while they would rather control the flow of the Deus Ex brand.

There are so many great possiblities with the Deus Ex editor. Look at Cassandra.
To not release the editor is idiocy. Especially as so many more people will be part ready for it by virtue of the Unreal2003 mod community. Blackcat (Thievery + Nightblade) could do wonders, not to mention all the other Unreal modders.

I sort of understand WS. I don't believe that part about "unstable SDK's" and all that. If there's a huge community wanting to have a go with the tools, there will be lots of people willing to take them "as is" without complaining at all, trust me on that. I think that decision reflects more Spector's sadness on the community not supporting that game that much, rather than technical reasons (especially if you consider the press universally kissing the games ass like few others). I still disagree on not releasing the SDK, but i don't see why it should have an effect on the T3 tools getting released or not. Broadly speaking, the Deus Ex community got less than 10 new levels whereas the Thief community got less than 350 and new FM's keep coming all the time. That reflects on the games' (better) quality and the fact that there's still plenty of interest. I'm pretty sure ISA knows that. However, i'm not too sure Eidos has realised Thief's potential.

If the SDK would be "unstable", how are they making a retail release game that WILL be stable??
