I'm looking for one of the two- either a good WW1 flight sim, or an alternate history sim. The only game that comes to mind for the latter is Crimson Skies. Are there others?

Il-2 Sturmovik: 1946 kind of/sort of for the alternate history genre. Takes some of the experimental planes that were never deployed in WWII and puts them in action.

Forgot about that one- good fun, but not terribly extensive. Most of the fictional aircraft were just more advanced models of real-world ones.

Not entirely WWI or a flight sim, but a great game nonetheless is Codename Eagle. It has some remarkably good flying (at least in multiplayer) and tons of other quaint stuff. Singleplayer is not as good as multiplayer, but its worth a try.

Well it's pretty old now but Wings of Glory, made by our beloved looking glass back in 1994 was a classic WW1 sim.

I'm fairly sure Wings of Glory was an Origin game, not Looking Glass. Although clearly there were close ties between the two.

Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, but it's ancient now.

I stumbled into (
http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-60101.html) this thread recently.
Edit: Even better. Here's a (
http://wwiaircombat.com/games/) masterlist of WWI flight sims, on the main fansite for this genre if you click "home".
It seems the best, most recent WWI flight sim is (
http://www.overflandersfields.com/info.htm) Over Flanders Fields, a WWI total conversion for Combat Flight Sim 3. Edit: They've released "Phase 2" which is freely downloadable somewhere. But they're going to charge for the upcoming Phase 3 (can they legally do that under the CFS3 license?), and it's due to be released any day now. It's very professional looking, so calling it a TC is a little misleading maybe.

Edit: By the way, there's also a
Battlefield 1942 WW1 total conversion called (
http://www.battlefield1918.net/) Battlefield 1918 that's worth checking out. ((

Edit 2: Following the OFF links, there's another WWI flight sim coming "tentatively - the first quarter of 2009, could be February" called (
http://wwiaircombat.com/games/rise-of-flight) Rise of Flight that also looks great ... correction, that looks epic. Wow, watch these in HQ if you can. (
