Stuff breaking down the systems
So hang on, despite the PS4 and the Xbox One having pretty much exactly the same specs, the PS4 is 'pretty fucking beefy' and 'future proof,' but the Xbox One is 'on par with a contemporary mid-range PC' and 'isn't exactly amazing.' Okay then.

And they want $500 for this.
They didn't announce a price. And neither did Sony for the PS4. I'd actually expect the Xbox One to be priced below the PS4, because Sony can't afford to take as much of a loss on system sales as Microsoft can.
And I'm not defending Microsoft here. It's just that they're equally dumb systems, and you're showing a staggering amount of bias.
The only dog I have in this hunt is that when these systems inevitably end up under-performing, it is going to be
catastrophic for the industry as a whole. We've already seen some insane stuff going on on the business side because AAA games are selling millions of copies, but not
enough millions of copies on the existing platforms. Factor in the additional cost of development on two new platforms, and missed targets are going to crush some old and storied publishers (Squeenix will probably be the first to go, potentially EA after that).

Haven't we been using that name to refer to the original Xbox for like... the last 8 fucking years?
I've usually seen it referred to as the oXbox, actually. Had the 360 been the Xbox 2 instead, the original might've been Xbox 1.

To be fair, the PS4 isn't the console that's running three OS's at the same time, though. Having the Windows 8 kernel in there pretty much ensures that a large portion of that RAM's going to be locked in. Sure, there are other things like the PS4 apparently has larger memory bandwidth and stuff, but we don't have a full spec reveal for the xbun specs yet.

What "insane stuff" are you refering to?

While I won't be buying one at launch, I've got my eyes on the PS4 - although probably for silly reasons, i.e. I liked the PS2 and PS3 and their line-up of exclusive games. My impression was that they got more original, interesting titles, whereas with the Xbox I always felt that I've got a PC, why would I need one of them?
Also, my PS3 is what allows me to play Criterion Blu-rays, and for that alone I'm a big fan.

And Yoichi Wada resigned immediately after that quarterly call. As well as John Riccitiello resigning from EA after a similar 'we are not making ENOUGH billions of dollars' quarterly report. Two major video game execs falling on their swords that close together is pretty much unheard of.
And lest you forgot, THQ being obliterated by bankruptcy court instead of saved by it. As well as massive layoffs at Trion, EA and others, just in the past few weeks.

We don't have full specs for PS4 either. And while it's not running three bare bones OSes at once, there's still a
lot of stuff going on in the background on the PS4 that's going to be taking up a chunk of that 8 gigs of RAM, too. Stuff like always on HD video recording of the game you're currently playing. What I'd heard when I was at THQ was that for Durango/Xbox One, three gigs are reserved for system software (your Windows 8 kernel, Kinect pipeline, etc), and two or so gigs reserved on PS4 (for the recording and social network connected stuff, as well as being able to switch on Remote Play at the drop of a hat). That extra gig isn't going to make that much of a difference, especially since the Xbox One and PS4 SKUs are pretty much going to be straight ports of the PC SKU for any multiplatform title.

I've never owned any of the Playstations so I'm not sure how viable tv/movie watching is on that one. Does/will the PS support streaming video from your PC? And do they have Netflix?
PS3 already does this.

Calling Windows 8 a fluke mistake by MS? That's something a bystander who hasn't actually used OS for a decent amount of time would say. It's literally an iteratively better version of Windows 7.
Ultra-fast bootup times
Search is near instantaneous because ALL FILES AND FOLDERS are indexed by default.
Increased usability in the desktop UI (eg Ribbon UI for File Explorer)
Smaller memory footprint
A much needed overhauled of the file copying systems (making 3rd party solutions like TeraCopy mostly redundant)
A new and improved Task Manager
Storing of your Windows settings in the cloud
You can do a "factory settings reset". This mean that you no longer have to complete reinstall Windows to remove gradual detritus build-up.
Etc.
Yes, the Metro UI is an absolute failure with mouse pointing interface devices. I rarely ever see the thing though, to the point I had completely forgotten that it existed until I saw screenshots of the Xbox One UI today. Pinning your most used apps to the Superbar is the natural thing to do, no different to Win 7. I've used Stardock's Start8 since day 1, which boots me directly to the desktop UI.
(RE: Xbox One. With Kinect being a standard requirement, Metro might actually work here, since hand waving is Touch screen-esque. )

Ah yup, surely the Squeenix troubles have NOTHING to do with Final Fantasy XIV being an absolute failure, nor FF Versus XII being stuck in development hell for an entire console generation.

Stop straw-manning and have a reread.
