Complaining about there being too many similarly playing shooters is like complaining about the number of generic action flicks the movie industry puts out every year.
And anyway, according to the preview snippets posted here, aren't there supposed to be some different mechanics at play apart from the shooting?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this analogy?

I may be letting the side down a bit here but I thought it looked friggin cool. I want to be a Brylcreme'd button down, horn rimmed fed investigating alien goo.
Yeah it won't be great if the gameplay shown is all there is. But I'm going to sit back and imagine a team of FBI guys undertaking specific investigations around some small city, collecting research materials, tracking down the source etc. Some sort of It Came From the Desert FPS.

Given how Bioshock's "different" mechanics turned out I'm not putting too much stock into XCOM having actual different mechanics. I half expect them to mean researching a new +1 tonic or a small damage bonus after taking X (hoho) photos, getting a mysterious alien weapon with unified ammo that acts as a gravity gun/ flamethrower/ bee producer/ alien freezer as you upgrade it etc.
Wow, have I ever got cynical.
On the positive side I do rather dig the art direction as well, although given the studios involved even that is heading to cliche.

Accomplish? Nothing, really. I'm just pointing out that this has been the state of affairs for yonks, and it will continue to be.

Some thoughts to anger you further:
Since you wont be dragging corpses back to base, does this mean we wont be dragging home enemy artifacts either?, will we be gathering any equalent of elerium or alien alloys?
Will we even be producing the weapons or are they a research unlock?

Next up - Transport Tycoon 2: the third person action game set in Vietnam.
I honestly can't understand the use of the XCom name. Anyone who's never heard of XCom will buy the game solely on it's own strengths, not the name. Anyone who has heard of XCom is probably less likely the buy the game because it's shitting on a legacy. Who are they trying to ensnare by wasting an IP?

I'm sure I'm not saying anything that hasn't already been said, but...
Marketing would account for it, even if there turns out to be no other justification. If, for the sake of argument, I were to assume that this truly is going to be a bland FPS with no traces of classic X-Com, then there would still be good* reason for them to brand it with a name that will give them instant and massive publicity, because in the mass market, good marketing sells games, plain and simple.
The X-Com brand is legendary. Plenty of people who have never played an X-Com game know the name, and plenty more will have a friend who does, or has. (Also, it's a catchy name -- always helpful.) People have been craving a new X-Com game for ages, so the publicity is guaranteed.
And this will hardly be the first time that the X-Com name has been applied to another genre.
* For business definitions of "good", at any rate.

All right, I'll give you that one, I laughed.
