One shotgun blast kills an alien? How would they ever destroy L.A. or Detroit?

Looks like the "command" interface is heavily influenced by Mass Effect. And that's no bad thing.
Yes it is.
Speaking of Mass Effect, this looks like it was written by Bioware.
"Shit! The alien has me!"
"I've got it!" He throws the alien and kills it with 3 shots.
"Thank god! Their weakness is bullets! Good work."

I don't give a shit about the original X-Com games and I barely give a shit about the Firaxis remake. The game 2K Marin was showing off a few years ago was sexy as hell though. I guess it could work as a third person shooter, I'm just imagining it being more like Mass Effect than the Brothers In Arms-with-a-tactical-overmap vibe the old trailers gave me.

Well their original idea was to make a quick buck off the X-Com name by turning it into something that would please a big market. Once they saw the public opinion, they realized that doing so with this legendary game would likely make a whole generation of gamers hate and boycott them forever.
So they postponed development and let Firaxis do a remake instead, the shooter will probably end up being released as a spinoff once Firaxis has revived the popularity of the X-Com name. Maybe they're changing it to 3rd person to make it more similar to the tactical game.

Regardless, I'm infinitely more interested in that than I am the remake. Then again the remake is $60.

I was very interested too when it was announced, but it seemed to me like they tried to make it sound like a lot more than it actually was when they realized that everyone was expecting advanced tactics and strategy before they decided to quietly remove it from media and rethink things.
But on the other hand maybe that extra development time has turned it into somthing a lot more interesting. :)

Yeah; a lovingly realised 1950s setting for a semi squad based FPS with over arching territory conflict is exactly the sort of thing you do to make a quick buck in today's market. Those things never miss.

The concept is great and i liked it but it's still something much simpler than what's expected of an X-Com game.

We barely got a look at how complicated it was before they started changing it.
The more interesting story is what explains their severe lack of backbone. It can't be whiny fans. Fallout clowns made tons of noise and Bethesda didn't fold. This way a bunch of folks, who already have two other games like the old ones now, feel strangely emboldened. But they needn't pat themselves on the back too hard.
Since Irrational got their identity back Marin are like the adrift bitch studio of 2K, quietly being run by the Weinsteins apparently.
