As far as live-action trailers go, that's a good one.

now that Firaxis have released their version of XCOM, hopefully most people will now focus on what this game is trying to do, rather than it simply not being a TBS
Come to think of it, it's kinda like what Capcom did with Bionic Commando, when they released Rearmed along with the "modern re-imagining". More publishers should pick up this trend when doing reboots of old classics. Have a smaller studio make an "old-school version" as well. The dev team for the reboot gets to realize all their crazy innovative ideas without having to worry about what the old fans will think, old fans get a spiffed up version of their beloved classic, and the publisher gets more money. Win-win-win! (this outcome of course hinges on the games in question playing and selling well)
Of course, if this became common practice it'd only be a matter of time before the old fans started bitching that a bigger budget is being spent on the reboot than the old-school version. :p

Firaxis isn't a "smaller studio" by any means. If anything, 2K Marin is a B-studio when compared alongside Irrational and Firaxis (BS2 being the best Bioshock withstanding. Jordan Thomas moved back to Irrational to assist with Infinite's writing in late 2011/early 2012 though.).

Just watched some new footage. Third-person view essentially killed it for me. In addition, it's clear how much they take from Enemy Unknown, cover icons and stuff.

G-men in Arms essentially.
The original Bioshock-like, X-Files-esque Horror FPS actually seemed more interesting than this new tactical TPS which seems to slavishly abide by XCOM lore. I agree with the general RPS commenter sentiment that they should've just dropped the XCOM branding done their own thing.

Yeah, it seems to me like there's a lot of potential for injecting some story and atmosphere into the relatively sterile plot and setting of the X-Com games. Playing X-Com feels like reading an after-action report or an article on a past event, it's designed to feel like a strategy game where you manage from a distance. Taking the same overall story (aliens covertly invading Earth) but framing it on a more personal level could make for an interesting, exciting game.

Not for me (although I did very much prefer the original first-person view, as I said earlier). Unfortunately, though, they seem to have ditched all the other interesting features alongside switching the viewpoint as well. :erg:
Still willing to give it a chance, but
much less interested in it now, that's for sure.

Didn't kill it for me either. If anything I quite liked what I saw in the gameplay videos. It's very Mass Effect combat-ish.
I quite liked the FPS or 2010 build as it is now referred also though. If anything I'd have loved it if they'd developed separately each of these branching games and released both of them, as each has their own unique things that make them worth playing. It really looks like the combination of Firaxis's game doing as well as it did + the HUGE failure of the Syndicate "reboot" scared the hell out of 2K, hence the change in style.
Their best bet would have been to release the FPS one under a different name as that wasn't X-COM at all and was more X-Files. Not that that is a bad thing. Call it X-Files - The Roswell Investigations or something similar. Name change and would have sold heaps. And then do the other game in the new style keeping the X-COM name. 2 separate games, double the cash. Easy money.

Third person defenitely works better for the ME-ish gameplay. That said, it doesn't look especially interesting from a gameplay standpoint. Hope the story will be interesting at least.

Ah, ok. The last Civ game I played was Civ2, so I didn't recognize their name and assumed they were small-time.

While I think this new version looks great and like something I'd definitely buy, I find 2K Marin's rationale for the changes as expressed in
(http://youtu.be/PdHFjVW-dIg) this video sounds depressingly like "we want to make more money", which is fair enough, as I get that game designers need to make the $$$, but it's sad that the really cool alien concepts from the previous iteration have been ditched in favour of the ones from the turn based game, since they're clearly chasing tie-in dollars.
